Presents an improved method for in-beam gamma -spectroscopic investigations of very neutron deficient nuclei using (HI, xnyp) reactions with targets and projectiles for which N approximately Z. In such a reaction the resulting compound nucleus predominantly evaporates charged particles which produces residual nuclei near the line of stability, while the cross sections for evaporation of neutrons leading to neutron deficient residual nuclei are small. The energy levels in /sup 74,76/Kr have been studied with a range of in-beam, gamma -spectroscopy techniques following heavy-ion reactions and in /sup 76/Kr via the radioactive decay of /sup 76/Rb. Breaks in the level energies and moments of inertia in /sup 74,76/Kr are observed at low spins. [...]

A new region of stable octupole deformation was predicted to occur with its center around the reinforcing shell gaps for beta /sub 3 /~0.15 at Z=56, N=88, and with /sub 56//sup 145/Ba/sub 89/ was predicted to be a prime candidate for stable octupole deformation. Evidence for stable octupole deformation was found in /sup 144/Ba, /sup 146/Ce and expanded to include odd-A /sup 143/Ba and other neighboring isotopes but was not observed in /sup 145/Ba. [...]
