Adhesion analysis of epoxy resin impregnation systems for Nb$_{3}$Sn superconducting magnets
/ Verma, Bharti (CERN) ; Piccin, Roland (CERN) ; Tommasini, Davide (CERN) ; Santillana, Ignacio Avilles (CERN)
The mechanical properties of Nb$_{3}$Sn coils are strongly influenced by the adhesion between the impregnation resin and the coil constituents, which may impact the magnets’ performance. To improve the understanding of the parameters governing the adhesion in such superconducting magnets, a study was conducted on several impregnation systems with respect to different coil parts, notably copper, stainless steel, aluminium, and glass fibre. Fabrication and Test of the Fourth Prototype of the D2 Orbit Corrector Dipole for HL-LHC
/ Ilardi, Veronica (CERN) ; Felice, Hélène (CERN ; IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Feuvrier, Jerome (CERN) ; Fiscarelli, Lucio (CERN) ; Foussat, Arnaud P (CERN) ; Kirby, Glyn (CERN) ; Kosowski, Filip (CERN) ; Mangiarotti, Franco J (CERN) ; Pincot, Francois-Olivier (CERN) ; Rogacki, Piotr T (CERN) et al.
As part of the High-Luminosity upgrade project (HL-LHC) for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, new double-aperture beam orbit corrector magnets will be installed near the recombination dipole (D2). These magnets are 2.2 m long Nb–Ti dipoles based on the Canted Cosine-Theta (CCT) design. [...]

Assembly and Test Results of the RMM1a,b Magnet, a CERN Technology Demonstrator Towards Nb3Sn Ultimate Performance
/ Gautheron, Emma (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Campagna, Guillaume (CERN) ; Felice, Hélène (CERN) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Mugnier, Sylvain (CERN) ; Perez, Juan Carlos (CERN) ; Petrone, Carlo (CERN) et al.
As part of the High Field Magnet technology development carried out at CERN, demonstrators are under construction to explore the full potential of Nb 3 Sn. The Racetrack Model Magnet (RMM) is one of them, building upon the successful Enhanced Racetrack Model Coil (eRMC) eRMC1a magnet which reached 16.5 T peak field or 16.3 T bore field at 1.9 K. [...]

Magnet technology and design of superconducting magnets for heavy ion gantry for hadron therapy
/ Lecrevisse, T (IRFU, Saclay) ; Kirby, G (CERN) ; Rossi, Lucio (Milan U. ; INFN, Milan) ; Carloni, Anna Giulia (INFN, Milan) ; Barna, Daniel (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Tommasini, Davide (CERN) ; Gautheron, Emma (CERN) ; Felcini, Enrico (CNAO, Milan) ; De Matteis, Ernesto (INFN, Milan) ; Prioli, Marco (INFN, Milan) et al.
Various initiatives in Europe have bene launched to study superconducting magnets for a rotatable gantry suitable for delivery up to 440 MeV/A carbon ions for hadron therapy. One initiative is led by INFN inside an agreement with CERN, CNAO and MedAustron aiming at designing and manufacturing a strongly curved costheta dipole (Rbending = 1.6 m) rated for 4 T central field and a ramp rate of 0.15-0.4 T/s. The excellent performance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the extension of Run 3 by one year have led to a significant increase of the expected integrated luminosity by the end of its operation and before the start of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), exceeding the design LHC integrated luminosity of 300 fb−1 for which the final focus region has been designed. In the context of the Future Circular Collider hadron-hadron (FCC-hh) R&D; program, the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), in collaboration with CERN, is responsible for designing and constructing the Falcon Dipole (Future Accelerator post-LHC Costheta Optimized Nb₃Sn Dipole), which is an important step towards the construction of High Field Nb₃Sn magnets for a post LHC collider. The magnet is a short model with one aperture of 50 mm and the target bore field is 12 T (14 T ’ultimate’ field). [...]

The next ion medical machine study at CERN: Towards a next generation cancer research and therapy facility with ion beams
/ Vretenar, Maurizio (CERN) ; Bencini, Vittorio (TERA Foundation (IT)) ; Khalvati, Mohammad Reza ; Lombardi, Alessandra (CERN) ; Tommasini, Davide (CERN) ; Benedetto, Elena (SEEIIST Association (CH)) ; Sapinski, Mariusz (SEEIIST Association (CH)) ; Foka, Yiota (GSI - Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung GmbH (DE))
Cancer therapy with ions has several advantages over X- ray and proton therapy, but its diffusion remains limited primarily because of the size and cost of the accelerator. To develop technologies that might improve performance and reduce accelerator cost with respect to present facilities, CERN has recently launched the Next Ion Medical Ma-chine Study (NIMMS), leveraging CERN expertise in accelerator fields to disseminate technologies developed for basic science.
