Chapter 21: Beam from Injectors: The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) Project / Meddahi, M (CERN) ; Rumolo, G (CERN) ; Alemany, R (CERN) ; Bartosik, H (CERN) ; Bellodi, G (CERN) ; Coupard, J (CERN) ; Damerau, H (CERN) ; Di Giovanni, G P (CERN) ; Funken, A (CERN) ; Garoby, R et al.
The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project aims at increasing the intensity and brightness in the LHC injectors in order to match the challenging requirements of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, while ensuring high availability and reliable operation of the injectors complex up to the end of the HL-LHC era. Fulfilling this goal requires extensive hardware modifications and new beam dynamics solutions across the entire LHC proton and ion injection chains: the new Linac4, the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB), the Proton Synchrotron (PS), the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), together with Linac3 and the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) as ion PS injectors. Some of the elements of the LHC injection and extraction systems will be upgraded or replaced to adapt to the increased beam brightness and intensity of the HL-LHC beams [1; 2]. The injection main protection absorber will be replaced with new hardware which will be able to absorb and withstand 288 HL-LHC bunches in case of an injection kicker failure. [...]

Monitored neutrino beams are a novel technology designed to provide measurements of the neutrino cross sections at GeV scale with a total uncertainty of O(1%), thus improving by one order of magnitude current experimental estimates. The ENUBET project is close to proving for the first time the feasibility of this concept and the Collaboration is preparing a proposal for a new neutrino beam at CERN based on the SPS accelerator and the ProtoDUNEs neutrino detectors that are already operative at the North Experimental Area. The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project was put in place between 2010 and 2021 to increase the intensity and brightness in the LHC injectors to match the challenging requirements of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, while ensuring reliable operation of the injectors complex up to the end of the HL-LHC era (ca. 2040). Automating beam dump failure detection using computer vision / Huhn, Francisco (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN)
The CERN SPS Beam Dump System (SBDS) is responsible for disposing the beam in the SPS in case of any machine malfunctioning or end of cycled operation. This is achieved by the actuation of kicker magnets with predefined pulses, which aim to: i) deviate the beam towards the absorber block (TIDVG); ii) dilute the particle density. Evidently, a malfunction of this system may have negative consequences, such as the absorber block degrading if the beam is not sufficiently diluted, unwanted activation of the surroundings or even damage to the vacuum chamber in case of complete failure.By leveraging a combination of real images from a beam screen device and data from simulations, we train an online monitoring system to identify potential failures of the SBDS from real-time images. The main SPS users are the experiments installed in North experimental Area (NA) which are served with a continuous 4.8 s long spill of protons and heavy ions. A third-integer resonant slow extraction is used to provide a uniform, long spill. [...]

Investigating the feasibility of delivering higher intensity proton beams to ECN3 at the CERN SPS North Area / Fraser, M A (CERN) ; Brugger, M (CERN) ; Ahdida, C (CERN) ; Arduini, G (CERN) ; Arrutia Sota, P A (CERN) ; Bartosik, H (CERN) ; Bernhard, J (CERN) ; Calviani, M (CERN) ; Colinet, A (CERN) ; Esposito, L S (CERN) et al.
Initiated through the Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) Study Group there is a strong interest from the scientific community to exploit the full intensity potential of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN for Fixed Target physics experiments before the end of this decade. With the ECN3 cavern in the North Area (NA) identified as a suitable candidate location for a future high-intensity experimental facility compatible with a large variety of experiments, the new PBC ECN3 Beam Delivery Task Force was mandated to assess the feasibility of delivering a slow extracted beam of up to 4x10^19 protons per year at 400 GeV. Feasibility of using crystal channeling for the beam loss mitigation in slow extraction at 8GeV / Nagaslaev, V (Fermilab) ; Tropin, I (Fermilab) ; Esposito, L (CERN) ; Fraser, M (CERN) ; Goddard, B (CERN) ; Velotti, F (CERN) ; Bandiera, L (Ferrara U.) ; Guidi, V (Ferrara U.) ; Mazzolari, A (Ferrara U.) ; Romagnoni, M (Ferrara U.) et al.
In the accelerator applications of slow extraction for High Energy Physics (HEP), one of the prime challenges is the mitigation of beam losses, which is becoming increasingly critical with the continuous rise in beam power. A significant breakthrough was achieved earlier at CERN through the successful deployment of proton beam channeling in a crystal at 400 GeV, effectively diverting the beam away from extraction septa and offering new avenues for improving slow extraction efficiency. The LHC as FCC injectors / Benedikt, Michael (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN)
The re-use of the modified LHC is presently the reference baseline for the High Energy Booster (HEB) injector into the FCC-hh hadron collider, although a number of other promising options exist. As part of the FCC study, the transformation of the LHC into the last acceleration stage into the new collider has been investigated in some detail, including the key aspects of new insertion designs and faster ramping. Design and performance of the ENUBET monitored neutrino beam / ENUBET Collaboration
The ENUBET project is aimed at designing and experimentally demonstrating the concept of monitored neutrino beams. These novel beams are enhanced by an instrumented decay tunnel, whose detectors reconstruct large-angle charged leptons produced in the tunnel and give a direct estimate of the neutrino flux at the source.
