Higher-curvature Gravities from Braneworlds and the Holographic c-theorem / Bueno, Pablo (CERN) ; Emparan, Roberto (ICREA, Barcelona ; Barcelona, Autonoma U. ; ICC, Barcelona U.) ; Llorens, Quim (ICC, Barcelona U.)
We study the structure of the higher-curvature gravitational densities that are induced from holographic renormalization in AdS$_{d+1}$. In a braneworld construction, such densities define a d-dimensional higher-curvature gravitational theory on the brane, which in turn is dual to a (d-1)-dimensional CFT living at its boundary. [...]

More is Different: Black Holes in Higher Dimensions / Emparan, Roberto (CERN)
I review of some of the recent developments in the field of classical General Relativity in dimension D> 4, and in particular its vacuum black hole solutions. These black holes are proving to have properties rather different from their four-dimensional counterparts, the Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes and a number of qualitatively new solutions and phenomena have begun to be uncovered. [...]

Black Hole Production at a TeV / Emparan, Roberto (CERN ; Barcelona U.)
In this talk I briefly discuss some features of a striking signature of TeV quantum gravity/strings and large extra dimensions: the production of exotic objects such as black holes, and their stringy precursors, the string resonances at large masses which can be dubbed `string balls'. [...]

Black Hole Astrophysics in AdS Braneworlds / Emparan, Roberto (CERN) ; Garcia-Bellido, Juan (Madrid, Autonoma U.) ; Kaloper, Nemanja (UC, Davis)
We consider astrophysics of large black holes localized on the brane in the infinite Randall-Sundrum model. Using their description in terms of a conformal field theory (CFT) coupled to gravity, deduced in Ref. [...]

Quantum Black Holes as Holograms in AdS Braneworlds / Emparan, Roberto (CERN ; Basque U., Bilbao) ; Fabbri, Alessandro (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; Kaloper, Nemanja (Stanford U., Phys. Dept.)
We propose a new approach for using the AdS/CFT correspondence to study quantum black hole physics. The black holes on a brane in an AdS$_{D+1}$ braneworld that solve the classical bulk equations are interpreted as duals of {\it quantum-corrected} $D$-dimensional black holes, rather than classical ones, of a conformal field theory coupled to gravity. Generalized Weyl Solutions / Emparan, Roberto (CERN ; Basque U., Bilbao) ; Reall, Harvey S. (Queen Mary, U. of London)
It was shown by Weyl that the general static axisymmetric solution of the vacuum Einstein equations in four dimensions is given in terms of a single axisymmetric solution of the Laplace equation in three-dimensional flat space. Weyl's construction is generalized here to arbitrary dimension $D\ge 4$. [...]

Cosmic Rays as Probes of Large Extra Dimensions and TeV Gravity / Emparan, Roberto (CERN) ; Masip, Manuel (Granada U., Theor. Phys. Astrophys.) ; Rattazzi, Riccardo (CERN)
If there are large extra dimensions and the fundamental Planck scale is at the TeV scale, then the question arises of whether ultra-high energy cosmic rays might probe them. We study the neutrino-nucleon cross section in these models. [...]

String Balls at the LHC and Beyond / Dimopoulos, Savas (Stanford U., Phys. Dept.) ; Emparan, Roberto (CERN ; Basque U., Bilbao)
In string theory, black holes have a minimum mass below which they transition into highly excited long and jagged strings --- ``string balls''. These are the stringy progenitors of black holes; because they are lighter, in theories of TeV-gravity, they may be more accessible to the LHC or the VLHC. [...]

Supergravity supertubes / Emparan, Roberto (CERN ; Basque U., Bilbao) ; Mateos, David (Cambridge U., DAMTP) ; Townsend, Paul K. (Cambridge U., DAMTP)
We find the supergravity solution sourced by a supertube: a (1/4)-supersymmetric D0-charged IIA superstring that has been blown up to a cylindrical D2-brane by angular momentum. The supergravity solution captures all essential features of the supertube, including the D2-dipole moment and an upper bound on the angular momentum: violation of this bound implies the existence of closed timelike curves, with a consequent ghost-induced instability of supertube probes..
