Deformation Behavior and Degradation on Rutherford Cabling of Nb$_{\text{3}}$Sn Wires / Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Medina-Clavijo, Bentejui (CERN) ; Rastoll, Cristin (CERN ; U. Bourgogne) ; Rodia, Davide (CERN ; Geneva U.) ; Malabaila, Marina (CERN) ; Barth, Christian (CERN) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) ; Boutboul, Thierry (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN)
In the production of Rutherford cables, Nb 3 Sn strands are subjected to severe deformation; and to evaluate this degradation prior to cabling, uniaxial rolling with a thickness reduction of ∼15% has often been used. The effects of this deformation on superconducting performance differ significantly between wire designs. [...]

The Micro-Services of Cern’s Critical Current Test Benches / Charrondière, Cedric (CERN) ; Andreassen, Odd (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Barth, Christian (CERN) ; Boutboul, Thierry (CERN) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) ; Hopkins, Simon (CERN) ; Koziol, Piotr (CERN) ; Reymond, Hubert (CERN)
In order to characterize the critical-current density of low temperature superconductors such as niobium¿titanium (NbTi) and niobium¿tin (Nb₃Sn) or high temperature superconductors such as magnesium-diboride MgB₂ or Rare-earth Barium Copper Oxide REBCO tapes, a wide range of custom instruments and interfaces are used. The critical current of a superconductor depends on temperature, magnetic field, current and strain, requiring high precision measurements in the nano Volt range, well-synchronized instrumentation, and the possibility to quickly adapt and replace instrumentation if needed. World-Wide Benchmarking of ITER Nb$_{3}$Sn Strand Test Facilities / Jewell, MC (ITER Org Fus Energy, F-13607 St Paul Les Durance, France.) ; Oberli, Luc-Rene (CERN) ; Takahashi, Yoshikazu (Japan Atom Energy Agcy, Naka, Ibaraki 3110193, Japan.) ; Shikov, Alexander (Bochvar Res Inst Inorgan Mat JSC VNIIAN, Moscow 123098, Russia.) ; Devred, Arnaud (ITER Org Fus Energy, F-13607 St Paul Les Durance, France.) ; Vostner, Alexander (Fus Energy F4E, Barcelona 08019, Spain.) ; Liu, Fang (Chinese Acad Sci ASIPP, Inst Plasma Phys, Hefei 230031, Peoples R China.) ; Wu, Yu (Chinese Acad Sci ASIPP, Inst Plasma Phys, Hefei 230031, Peoples R China.) ; Jewell, Matthew C (ITER Org Fus Energy, F-13607 St Paul Les Durance, France.) ; Boutboul, Thierry (CERN) et al.
The world-wide procurement of Nb$_{3}$Sn and NbTi for the ITER superconducting magnet systems will involve eight to ten strand suppliers from six Domestic Agencies (DAs) on three continents. To ensure accurate and consistent measurement of the physical and superconducting properties of the composite strand, a strand test facility benchmarking effort was initiated in August 2008. [...]

Finite Element Model to Study the Deformations of Nb$_{3}$Sn Wires for the Next European Dipole (NED) / Farinon, S (INFN, Sezione di Genova, Genova, Italy) ; Boutboul, Thierry (CERN) ; Devred, Arnaud (CEA/Saclay, DSM/DAPNIA/SACM, Gif-sur-Yvette Cedex, France ; CERN) ; Fabbricatore, P (INFN, Sezione di Genova, Genova, Italy) ; Leroy, Daniel (CERN) ; Oberli, Luc-Rene (CERN)
The Next European Dipole (NED) activity is aimed at the development of a large-aperture, high-field superconducting magnet relying on high-performances Nb$_{3}$Sn conductors. Part of the NED program is devoted to the mechanical study of a new generation of Nb$_{3}$Sn wires and to predict and describe their behavior under the severe loading conditions of the cabling process.
