Beam-Based Reconstruction of the Shielded Quench-Heater Fields for the LHC Main Dipoles / Richtmann, Lea (CERN) ; Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Ravaioli, Emmanuele (CERN) ; Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN)
Small orbit oscillations of the circulating particle beams have been observed immediately following quenches in the LHC’s superconducting main dipole magnets. Magnetic fields generated during the discharge into the quench heaters were identified as the cause. [...]

On the Stability of Mixed Finite-Element Formulations for High-Temperature Superconductors / Dular, Julien (Liege U.) ; Harutyunyan, Mane (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Bortot, Lorenzo (Darmstadt, Tech. U. ; CERN) ; Schöps, Sebastian (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Vanderheyden, Benoit (Liege U.) ; Geuzaine, Christophe (Liege U.)
In this work, we present and analyze the numerical stability of two coupled finite element formulations. The first one is the h-a-formulation and is well suited for modeling systems with superconductors and ferromagnetic materials. [...]

High-temperature superconducting screens for magnetic field-error cancellation in accelerator magnets / Bortot, L. (CERN ; Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Mentink, M. (CERN) ; Petrone, C. (CERN) ; Van Nugteren, J. (CERN) ; Deferne, G. (CERN) ; Koettig, T. (CERN) ; Kirby, G. (CERN) ; Pentella, M. (CERN ; Turin Polytechnic) ; Perez, J.C. (CERN) ; Pincot, F.O. (CERN) et al.
Accelerators magnets must have minimal magnetic field imperfections for reducing particle-beam instabilities. In the case of coils made of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes, the field imperfections from persistent currents need to be carefully evaluated. [...]

Numerical Analysis of the Screening Current-Induced Magnetic Field in the HTS Insert Dipole Magnet Feather-M2.1-2 / Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN ; Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Mentink, Matthias (CERN) ; Petrone, Carlo (CERN) ; Van Nugteren, Jeroen (CERN) ; Kirby, Glyn (CERN) ; Pentella, Mariano (CERN ; Polytech. Turin) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN) ; Schöps, Sebastian (Darmstadt, Tech. U.)
Screening currents are field-induced dynamic phenomena which occur in superconducting materials, leading to persistent magnetization. Such currents are of importance in ReBCO tapes, where the large size of the superconducting filaments gives rise to strong magnetization phenomena. [...]

Analysis of short-circuit transients in the LHC main dipole circuit / Liakopoulou, A (CERN ; Twente U., Enschede) ; Annema, A J (Twente U., Enschede) ; Bortot, L (CERN ; Darmstadt, Tech. After the occurrence and detection of a short circuit to ground in the LHC main dipole circuit, a fast power abort is triggered and the current in the circuit starts decaying semi-exponentially from a maximum value of 11.85 kA to zero, with a time constant of 103 s. If a short to ground occurs, the current flows through the fuse that is present in the grounding subcircuit. [...]

Fast Failures in the LHC and the future High Luminosity LHC / Lindstrom, B. (CERN ; Uppsala U.) ; Bélanger, P. (CERN) ; Bortot, L. (CERN) ; Denz, R. (CERN) ; Mentink, M. (CERN) ; Ravaioli, E. (CERN) ; Rodriguez Mateos, F. (CERN) ; Schmidt, R. (CERN) ; Uythoven, J. (CERN) ; Valette, M. (CERN) et al.
An energy of $362\:\text{MJ}$ is stored in each of the two LHC proton beams for nominal beam parameters. This will be further increased to about $700\:\text{MJ}$ in the future High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and uncontrolled beam losses represent a significant hazard for the integrity and safe operation of the machine. The application of high-temperature superconductors to accelerator magnets for future particle colliders is under study. Numerical methods are crucial for an accurate evaluation of the complex dynamical behavior of the magnets, especially concerning the magnetic field quality and thermal behavior. [...]

Conceptual Design of the FCC-hh Dipole Circuits With Integrated CLIQ Protection System / Prioli, Marco (CERN ; INFN, Milan) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (CERN ; PSI, Villigen) ; Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Maciejewski, Michał (CERN ; Lodz U. Tech. (main)) ; Salmi, Tiina (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN)
The Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) project is a conceptual study whose goal is to design the successor of the Large Hadron Collider, increasing the collision energy from 14 to 100 TeV. The energy stored in the 16-T superconducting dipole magnets and the length of the sectors composing the 100-km FCC tunnel are considerably larger than those in present accelerators. [...]
