Preparing for a new Data Center: Automated Management of a 10’000 node bare-metal fleet in CERN IT
/ Savchenko, Maryna (CERN) ; Atzori, Luca (CERN) ; Papakyprianou, Nikos (CERN) ; Piszczek, Michał (CERN) ; Wiebalck, Arne (CERN)
CERN IT has consolidated all life-cycle management of its physical server fleet on the Ironic bare-metal API. From the initial registration upon the first boot, over the inventory checking, the burn-in and the benchmarking for acceptance, the provisioning to the end users and the repairs during its service, up to the retirement at the end of the servers’ life, all stages can be managed within this framework. RCS-ICT PSO: Access and Support for Heterogeneous, non-x86, and latest Single-architecture Chips
/ Wiebalck, Arne (CERN) ; Girone, Maria (CERN) ; Piparo, Danilo (CERN) ; Blomer, Jakob (CERN)
This PSO aims to establish a consistent framework and processes to express, follow, and resource the transition of a technology from "evaluate" to "in production", leveraging different accesses to non-x86 resources, such as industry collaborations, HPC testbeds, public cloud offerings, and on-premises services [...]

Manila on CephFS at CERN
/ Wiebalck, Arne (CERN)
In response to the user demand for a light-weight provisioning of distributed file system shares, the OpenStack and Ceph teams at CERN have recently added Manila/CephFS to their service catalogues. While leveraging the operational experience with a 190'000 core OpenStack deployment and a 12 PB Ceph cluster for such a self-service kiosque suggested itself, the service design and setup phases were followed by a number of functionality and stress tests to ensure the individual components are ready for production use. Building an organic block storage service at CERN with Ceph
/ Ster, Daniel van der ; Wiebalck, Arne (CERN)
Emerging storage requirements, such as the need for block storage for both OpenStack VMs and file services like AFS and NFS, have motivated the development of a generic backend storage service for CERN IT. The goals for such a service include (a) vendor neutrality, (b) horizontal scalability with commodity hardware, (c) fault tolerance at the disk, host, and network levels, and (d) support for geo-replication. Toward a petabyte-scale AFS service at CERN
/ Ster, Daniel van der ; Moscicki, Jakub T (CERN) ; Wiebalck, Arne (CERN)
AFS is a mature and reliable storage service at CERN, having worked for more than 20 years as the provider of Unix home directories and project areas. Recently, the AFS service has grown at unprecedented rates (200% in the past year), this growth was unlocked thanks to innovations in both the hardware and software components of our file servers.
