An electron beam test stand has been designed and constructed at CERN as part of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, in collaboration with the ARIES project, to test components related to the Hollow Electron Lens (HL-LHC) and the GSI Space Charge Compensation Electron Lens (ARIES). This comprehensive test facility incorporates normal conducting solenoid magnets, including horizontal and vertical correctors, which generate fields of fractional Tesla magnitude. [...]

Beam studies using a Cherenkov diffraction based beam position monitor for AWAKE
/ Spear, Bethany (JAI, UK) ; Pakuza, Collette (CERN) ; Senes, Eugenio (CERN) ; Wendt, Manfred (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, UK) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Lefevre, Thibaut (CERN)
A beam position monitor based on Cherenkov diffraction radiation (ChDR) is being investigated as a way to disentangle the signals generated by the electromagnetic fields of a short-pulse electron bunch from a long proton bunch co-propagating in the AWAKE plasma acceleration experiment at CERN. These ChDR BPMs have undergone renewed testing under a variety of beam conditions with proton and electron bunches in the AWAKE common beamline, at 3 different frequency ranges between 20-110 GHz to quantify the effectiveness of discriminating the electron beam position with and without proton bunches present. [...]

Beam Instrumentation Challenges for FCC-ee
/ Wendt, Manfred (CERN) ; Carideo, Emanuela (CERN) ; Härer, Bastian (KIT, Karlsruhe, IPE) ; Iriso, Ubaldo (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Mitsuhashi, Toshiyuki (Sokendai, Tsukuba) ; Müller, Anke-Susanne (KIT, Karlsruhe, IPE) ; Niehues, Gudrun (KIT, Karlsruhe, IPE) ; Reißig, Micha (KIT, Karlsruhe, IPE) et al.
For the accelerator-based future of high energy physics at the energy frontier, CERN started to investigate a 92 km circumference Future Circular Collider (FCC), as e⁺/e⁻ collider the FCC-ee will operate at beam energies up to 182.5 GeV. Beside the machine operational aspects, beam instrumentation will play a key role in verifying and optimizing the machine to achieve the ambitious beam parameters and quality. [...]

An electron beam test stand was designed and constructed at CERN, under the umbrella of the Hi-Lumi project, to tests components for the Hollow Electron Lens (HEL), and in collaboration with the ARIES project for testing the Space Charge Compensation gun. The test facility features normal conductive magnets providing solenoid fields of the order of fractions of Tesla, beam diagnostics including screens (YAG, Cromox and OTR) for the full electron beam characterisation, a Faraday Cup collector to measure the total electron current, and a high voltage power supply up to 40 kV (with the possibility of biasing both gun and collector). Electron beam studies on a beam position monitor based on Cherenkov diffraction radiation
/ Pakuza, Collette (JAI, UK) ; Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Schloegelhofer, Andreas (CERN) ; Aksoy, Avni (CERN) ; Spear, Bethany (JAI, UK) ; Senes, Eugenio (CERN) ; Lasocha, Kacper (CERN) ; Wendt, Manfred (CERN) ; Krupa, Michal (CERN) ; Chritin, Nicolas (CERN) et al.
A beam position monitor based on Cherenkov diffraction radiation (ChDR BPM) is currently under investigation to disentangle the electromagnetic field of an electron bunch from that of a proton bunch travelling together in time and space in the beam-line of the AWAKE plasma acceleration experiment at CERN. The signals from a horizontal pair of ChDR BPM radiators have been studied under a variety of beam conditions at the CLEAR electron beam test facility. [...]

Improvements on the LHC Interlock BPM system

The LHC interlock BPM system is used as part of the beam abort system to insure that beam trajectories in those regions are conform with a safe extraction of the beams from the main ring to the dump lines. After more than 10 years of operation, the system has shown some limitations in bandwidth and dynamic range and a study was initiated to look for improvements. [...]

RF measurements II
/ Wendt, Manfred (speaker) (CERN)
The measurement of radio-frequency (RF) signals and the characterization of RF components, systems and subsystems used in particle accelerators is based on particular measurement instruments, like the RF vector network analyzer (VNA) and the spectrum analyzer (SA), but also on general-purpose instruments, like the oscilloscope and others. Before going into some details of SAs and VNAs, the concept of travelling waves in transmission lines is explained, along with their characteristics and the definition of the complex reflection coefficient.
