Some experimental limits on the annihilation cross sections $σ_{\textrm{ann}}$ of antiprotons on carbon, palladium, and platinum targets were determined at the previously unexplored kinetic energy region E≈125 keV. Information on $σ_{\textrm{ann}}$ at such low antiproton energies is important in understanding the dynamics of the annihilation process, and provides useful data for models that attempt to describe the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe by assuming the existence of islands of antimatter concentration..

Charge, parity, and time reversal (CPT) symmetry implies that a particle and its antiparticle have the same mass. The antiproton-to-electron mass ratio Embedded Image can be precisely determined from the single-photon transition frequencies of antiprotonic helium. [...]

The ASACUSA (the Atomic Spectroscopy And Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) collaboration of CERN is currently attempting to measure the antiproton-nucleus in-flight annihilation cross sections on thin target foils of C, Pd, and Pt at the kinetic energy of 130 keV. The low-energy antiprotons were provided by the Antiproton Decelerator of CERN and a radio-frequency quadrupole decelerator developed by the ASACUSA collaboration. [...]

The study of the antiproton ( $\bar {p}$ ) annihilation cross section on nuclei at low energies (eV-MeV region) has implications for fundamental cosmology as well as for nuclear physics. Concerning the former, different models try to explain the matter/antimatter asymmetry in the universe assuming the existence of the so-called “islands” where antinucleon-nucleon annihilations occur in the border region (Cohen et al. Segmented scintillation detectors with silicon photomultiplier readout for measuring antiproton annihilations

The Atomic Spectroscopy and Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons (ASACUSA) experiment at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility of CERN constructed segmented scintillators to detect and track the charged pions which emerge from antiproton annihilations in a future superconducting radiofrequency Paul trap for antiprotons. A system of 541 cast and extruded scintillator bars were arranged in 11 detector modules which provided a spatial resolution of 17 mm. [...]

Observation of the 1154.9 nm transition of antiprotonic helium

The resonance transition $(n,l)=(40,36)\to(41,35)$ of the antiprotonic helium ($\overline{\mathrm{p}}^{4}$He$^{+}$) isotope at a wavelength of 1154.9 nm was detected by laser spectroscopy. The population of $\overline{\mathrm{p}}^{4}$He$^{+}$ occupying the resonance parent state $(40,36)$ was found to decay at a rate of $0.45\pm0.04$ $\mu$s$^{-1}$, which agreed with the theoretical radiative rate of this state.
