Medipix3 proton and carbon ion measurements across full energy ranges and at clinical flux rates in MedAustron IR1 / Bal, Navrit Johan Singh (Nikhef, Amsterdam ; CERN) ; Schmitzer, Claus Stefan (MedAustron) ; De Franco, Andrea (MedAustron) ; Enke, Sascha (MedAustron)
The Medipix3, a hybrid pixel detector with a silicon sensor, has been evaluated as a beam instrumentation device with proton and carbon ion measurements in the non-clinical research room (IR1) of MedAustron Ion Therapy Center. Protons energies are varied from 62.4 to 800 MeV with $10^{4}$ to $10^{8}$ protons per second impinging on the detector surface. [...]

The delivery of clinical beams for patient treatment at the MedAustron Ion Therapy Center requires extensive accelerator performance verifications, which are performed in several steps. In first instance, the key parameters of the beam delivered to the irradiation rooms (beam position, spot size, energy and intensity) are verified via measurements performed with beam diagnostic devices distributed along the accelerator. The synchrotron-based MedAustron accelerator in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, has seen the first clinical beam and has been certified as a medical accelerator in December 2016. This represented a major milestone for the facility whose original design originated more than a decade ago and construction started four years ago. [...]

Numerical modeling of the Linac4 negative ion source extraction region by 3D PIC-MCC code ONIX / Mochalskyy, S (LPGP, Orsay) ; Lettry, J (CERN) ; Minea, T (LPGP, Orsay) ; Lifschitz, AF (LPGP, Orsay) ; Schmitzer, C (CERN) ; Midttun, O (CERN) ; Steyaert, D (CERN)
At CERN, a high performance negative ion (NI) source is required for the 160 MeV H- linear accelerator Linac4. The source is planned to produce 80 mA of H- with an emittance of 0.25 mm mradN-RMS which is technically and scientifically very challenging. [...]

Gas Injection And Fast Pressure-Rise Measurements For The Linac4 H− Source / Mahner, E (CERN) ; Chiggiato, P (CERN) ; Lettry, J (CERN) ; Mattei, S (CERN) ; O'Neil, M (CERN) ; Neupert, H (CERN) ; Pasquino, C (CERN) ; Schmitzer, C (CERN)
In the era of the Large Hadron Collider, the CERN injector complex comprising the 34 years old Linac2 with its primary proton source, is presently upgraded with a new linear accelerator for H− (Linac4). The design, construction, and test of volume production and cesiated RF-driven H− ion sources is presently ongoing with the final goal of producing an H− beam with 80 mA beam current, 45 keV beam energy, 500 s pulse length, and a repetition rate of 2 Hz. H- Ion Sources For CERN’s Linac4 / Lettry, J (CERN) ; Aguglia, D (CERN) ; Coutron, Y (CERN) ; Chaudeta, E (CERN) ; Dallocchio, A (CERN) ; Gil Flores, J (CERN) ; Hansen, J (CERN) ; Mahner, E (CERN) ; Mathot, S (CERN) ; Mattei, S (CERN) et al.
The specifications set to the Linac4 ion source are: H- ion pulses of 0.5 ms duration, 80 mA intensity and 45 keV energy within a normalized emittance of 0.25 mmmrad RMS at a repetition rate of 2 Hz. In 2010, during the commissioning of a prototype based on H- production from the plasma volume, it was observed that the powerful co-extracted electron beam inherent to this type of ion source could destroy its electron beam dump well before reaching nominal parameters.
