Mechanical design of the 12 T superconducting dipole. An accelerator-fit, Nb₃Sn double aperture magnet / Masci, Marco (CERN) ; Perini, Diego (CERN) ; Baudin, Lucie (CERN)
In the context of the High Field Magnet programme, the 12 T Nb3Sn activity aims to design and manufacture a 2-meter-long, 12 T, cosθ, double aperture dipole. To reach magnetic fields higher than 10 T in accelerator magnets, brittle epoxy-impregnated Nb3Sn Rutherford cables are employed, which makes it difficult to predict the coil's mechanical limit and, in extenso, the magnet's performance. A Combined Testing and Modelling Methodology for the Mechanics of High-Field Superconducting Magnets / Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Holko, Michal (CERN) ; Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Masci, Marco (CERN) ; de Frutos, Oscar Sacristan (CERN) ; Savary, Frédéric (CERN) ; Wolf, Felix (CERN)
The use of superconducting composite cables based on Nb3Sn, an intermetallic compound of Niobium and Tin, is one of the favorite routes to reach magnetic fields higher than 10 T in state-of-the-art accelerator magnets. The brittle and nonlinear nature of the epoxy-impregnated Nb3Sn Rutherford cable makes challenging to predict its mechanical limits and, consequently, the overall performance of the magnet. [...]

Design and Fabrication of FRESCA2 Cryostat / Dallocchio, Alessandro (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Tabian, Iuliana (CERN) ; Masci, Marco (CERN) ; Riffaud, Benoit (CERN) ; Zuccalli, Laurent ; Maire, Vincent ; Lombardo, Davide Maria (Universita e INFN, Firenze (IT)) ; Debeux, Julien ; Rigutto, Emilien (CERN) et al.
In the framework of the High Field Magnet activities, a new FRESCA2 test station (Facility for Reception of Superconducting Cables 2) was designed and fabricated at CERN to measure superconducting cables in background magnetic fields. [...]

Efficient Coupling of Hydrodynamic and Energy-Deposition Codes for Hydrodynamic-Tunnelling Studies on High-Energy Particle Accelerators / Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Kruse-Hansen, Jens (CERN) ; Masci, Marco (CERN) ; Nie, Yuancun (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN)
The machine-protection evaluation of high-energy accelerators comprises the study of beyond-design failures, including the direct beam impact onto machine elements. In case of a direct impact, the nominal beam of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) would penetrate more than 30 meters into a solid copper target. [...]
