Progress in new environmental friendly low temperature detector cooling systems development for the ATLAS and CMS experiments / Zwalinski, L (CERN) ; Barroca, P (Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Bortolin, C (CERN) ; Bhanot, V (CERN) ; Collot, J (LPSC, Grenoble) ; Daguin, J (CERN) ; Davoine, L (CERN) ; Doubek, M (CERN) ; Giakoumi, D (CERN) ; Hanf, P (CERN) et al.
In the frame of the progress towards the High Luminosity Program of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the ATLAS and CMS experiments are boosting the preparation of their new environmental friendly low temperature detector cooling systems. This paper will present a general overview of the progress in development and construction of the future CO2 cooling systems for silicon detectors at ATLAS and CMS (trackers, calorimeters and timing layers), due for implementation during the 3rd Long Shut Down of LHC (LS3). First Steps in Automated Software Development Approach for LHC Phase II Upgrades CO₂ Detector Cooling Systems / Zwalinski, Lukasz (CERN) ; Daguin, Jerome (CERN) ; Davoine, Loic (CERN) ; Frank, Norbert (CERN) ; Giakoumi, Dina (CERN) ; Ostrega, Maciej (CERN) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Tropea, Paola (CERN) ; Verlaat, Bart (CERN)
With refrigerating power of the order of 1.5 kW at -35 °C and full compatibility with Detector Control System standards, Light Use Cooling Appliance for Surface Zones (LUCASZ) is the first movable medium size evaporative CO₂ detector cooling system. By 2018 a series of 4 LUCASZ units has been fully deployed by the EP-DT group at CERN. [...]

ATLAS “Baby-DEMO” / Zwalinski, L (CERN) ; Bojdol, K (RSNC, Poznan) ; Bortolin, C (CERN) ; Chmielewski, D (Jagiellonian U.) ; Dziurdzia, P (CERN) ; Giakoumi, D (CERN) ; Godlewski, J (Cracow, INP) ; Ilyashenko, I (PNPI, CSTD) ; Kalinowski, M (CERN) ; Kantor, R (Cracow Tech. U.) et al.
Evaporative CO 2 has been selected as the main detector cooling technology for the Phase II upgrade of the LHC silicon detectors at CERN. In order to provide input to the ATLAS Pixel TDR about the minimum attainable cooling temperature by the end of 2017, ATLAS, with a contribution of CMS, has launched a dedicated detector cooling R&D; study nick-named Baby-DEMO. Advancements and plans for the LHC upgrade detector thermal management with CO2 evaporative cooling / Tropea, P (CERN) ; Daguin, J (CERN) ; Giakoumi, D (CERN) ; Koss, N (CERN) ; Petagna, P (CERN) ; Postema, H (CERN) ; Schmid, D (CERN) ; Verlaat, B (CERN) ; Zwalinski, L (CERN)
Following its pioneering application in the present LHCb Velo detector, CO$_{2}$ evaporative cooling has become the consolidated technology for the thermal management of low-temperature operated silicon detectors at LHC. ATLAS Insertable B-Layer and CMS Phase I Pixel are successfully operating with such cooling system since a few years and LHCb has selected the same technology for the new Upstream Tracker and the upgraded Velo, both to be installed during LS2.
