Reconfiguration of SPS Landau octupole circuits to minimise second order chromaticity / Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Carlà, Michele (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN)
In the SPS Q20 optics presently used for LHC beams, the Landau octupole families of the SPS (LOF and LOD circuits) generate large second order chromaticity due to the relatively high dispersion at their locations. Since the induced second order chromaticity results in enhanced losses due to the large incoherent tune spread, these octupoles cannot be used for mitigating transverse instabilities for LHC beams. Characterisation of SPS slow extraction spill quality degradation / Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Buzio, Marco (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN) ; Di Capua, Vincenzo (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN)
The main physics users of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) are the experiments installed in the North Area (NA). They are supplied with slowly extracted protons or heavy ions, exploiting a third integer slow extraction to provide a 4.8 s spill. [...]

Annual high intensity requests of over $1 \times 10^{19}$ protons on target (POT) from the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) Fixed Target (FT) physics program continue, with the prospect of requests for even higher, unprecedented levels in the coming decade. A concerted and multifaceted R&D; effort has been launched to understand and reduce the slow extraction induced radioactivation of the SPS and to anticipate future experimental proposals, such as SHiP [1] at the SPS Beam Dump Facility (BDF) [2], which will request an additional $4 \times 10^{19}$ POT per year. Slow Extraction Efficiency Measurements at CERN SPS / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
The high efficiency of most slow extraction systems makes quantifying the exact amount of beam lost in the process extremely challenging. This is compounded by the lack of time structure in the extracted beam, as is typically required by the high-energy physics experiments, and the difficulty in accurately calibrating D.C. [...]

Observations of SPS Slow-Extracted Spill Quality Degradation and Possible Improvements / Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Hirlaender, Simon (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Michels, Olivier (CERN) ; Pari, Michelangelo (CERN)
The SPS delivers slow extracted proton and heavy ion spills of several seconds to the North Area fixed target experiments with a very high duty factor. Reduced machine reproducibility due to magnetic history and power supply ripples on the main circuits lead however to frequent degradation of the spill duty factor. [...]

Identification and Removal of SPS Aperture Limitations / Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Cettour Cave, Stephane (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN) ; Cruikshank, Paul (CERN) ; Ferreira Somoza, Jose (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Pasquino, Chiara (CERN)
The CERN SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) serves as LHC injector and provides beam for the North Area fixed target experiments. Since the 2016 run automated local aperture scans have been performed with the main focus on the vertical plane where limitations typically arise due to the flat vacuum chambers in most SPS elements. In 2017 the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring demonstrated once more the feasibility of injecting, accumulating, cooling and accelerating a new nuclei, $^{129}$Xe${39+}$. The operation of this new ion species started at the beginning of March with the start up of the xenon ion source and the Linac3. [...]
