Subatomare Phys.) ; Antonello, Massimiliano (INFN, Milan ; Insubria U., Como) ; Belov, Alexander (Moscow, INR) ; Bonomi, Germano (INFM, Brescia ; INFN, Pavia) ; Brusa, Roberto (Trento U. ; TIFPA-INFN, Trento) ; Caccia, Massimo (INFN, Milan ; Insubria U., Como) ; Caravita, Ruggero (CERN) ; Castelli, Fabrizio (INFN, Milan ; Milan U.) et al.
We report on recent developments in positronium work in the frame of antihydrogen production through charge exchange in the AEgIS collaboration [1]. In particular, we present a new technique based on spatially imaging a cloud of positronium by collecting the positrons emitted by photoionization. [...]

Absolute fraction of emitted Ps determined by GEANT4 supported analysis of gamma spectra
/ Rienäcker, Benjamin (CERN ; Tech. U., Munich (main)) ; Gigl, Thomas (Tech. U., Munich (main)) ; Nebbia, Giancarlo (INFN, Padua) ; Pino, Felix (INFN, Padua) ; Hugenschmidt, Christoph (Tech. U., Munich (main))
The fraction of positronium (Ps) emitted from a surface of a germanium single crystal at high temperature is usually assumed to approach unity at zero positron implantation energy. In the experiment, however, the determination of the absolute Ps fraction is not straight forward since recording a reference spectrum with $100\,\%$ Ps formation remains demanding. [...]

We describe a novel method to use a scintillating fiber detector similar to the Fast Annihilation Cryogenic Tracking (FACT) used at the antimatter experiment AE$\bar{g}$IS to monitor the presence of ortho-positronium. A single scintillating fiber was coupled to a photomultiplier tube and irradiated by flashes of about 6 x 10$^{6}$ 511 keV $\gamma$-rays produced by $\approx10\,\text{ns}$ long positron pulses. [...]

Pulsed production of antihydrogen

Antihydrogen atoms with K or sub-K temperature are a powerful tool to precisely probe the validity of fundamental physics laws and the design of highly sensitive experiments needs antihydrogen with controllable and well defined conditions. We present here experimental results on the production of antihydrogen in a pulsed mode in which the time when 90% of the atoms are produced is known with an uncertainty of ~250 ns. [...]

Toward inertial sensing with a 2$^{3}$S positronium beam
/ Mariazzi, Sebastiano (Trento U. ; TIFPA-INFN, Trento) ; Caravita, Ruggero (TIFPA-INFN, Trento ; CERN) ; Doser, Michael (CERN) ; Nebbia, Giancarlo (INFN, Padua) ; Brusa, Roberto S. (TIFPA-INFN, Trento ; Trento U.)
In this work, we discuss the possibility of inertial sensing with positronium in the $2^3 S$ metastable state for the measurement of optical dipole, relativistic and gravitational forces on a purely leptonic matter-antimatter system. Starting from the characteristics of an available $2^3 S$ beam, we estimate the time necessary to measure accelerations ranging from $\sim10^5$$m/s^2$ to 9.1 $m/s^2$ with two different inertial sensitive devices: a classical moiré deflectometer and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We describe a multi-step “rotating wall” compression of a mixed cold antiproton–electron non-neutral plasma in a 4.46 T Penning–Malmberg trap developed in the context of the AEḡIS experiment at CERN. Such traps are routinely used for the preparation of cold antiprotons suitable for antihydrogen production. [...]

Positron Manipulation and Positronium Laser Excitation in AEgIS

Production of antihydrogen by using the charge exchange reaction, as proposed by AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy), requires the formation of a dense cloud of positronium atoms excited to Rydberg states. In this work, the recent advances in AEgIS towards this result are described. [...]

AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is an experiment that aims to perform the first direct measurement of the gravitational acceleration g of antihydrogen in the Earth’s field. A cold antihydrogen beam will be produced by charge exchange reaction between cold antiprotons and positronium excited in Rydberg states. [...]

Material recognition with a 252Cf source

Material recognition is studied by measuring simultaneously the transmission of neutron and gamma rays produced by a time-tagged 252Cf source. Light elements (C,N,O) are identified by using the measured transmission versus neutron time of flight. [...]
