Use of VUV Imaging to Evaluate COTR and Beam-Steering Effects in a SASE FEL at 130 nm / Lumpkin, Alex H ; Chae, Yong Chul ; Dejus, Roger J ; Erdmann, Mark ; Lewellen, John W ; Li, Yuelin
We have continued to explore VUV operations on the Advanced Photon Source (APS) self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free-electron laser (FEL). With the installation of a fifth VUV imaging station located after undulator 7 of an eight-undulator series, we have performed our most complete SASE gain curve measurements at 130 nm as well as obtaining beam profile, position, and divergence information. An Experimental Study of the Beam-Steering Effect on the FEL Gain at LEUTL's Segmented Undulators / Chae, Yong Chul ; Erdmann, Mark ; Lewellen, John W ; Lumpkin, Alex H ; Milton, Stephen
The electron trajectories at the LEUTL, a SASE FEL facility at Argonne, were routinely corrected during the user run in order to deliver maximum radiation power to the user. Even though we knew from experience that SASE gain at the segmented undulators was dependent on the trajectory, the quantitative understanding of steering effects associated with the specific trajectory was lacking. [...]

State-of-the-Art Electron Guns and Injector Designs for Energy Recovery Linacs (ERL) / Todd, Alan ; Ambrosio, Anthony ; Ben-Zvi, Ilan ; Benson, Stephen V ; Blüm, Hans ; Burrill, Andrew ; Calaga, Rama ; Cameron, Peter ; Campisi, Isidoro E ; Chang, Xiangyun et al.
A key technology issue of ERL devices for high-power free-electron laser (FEL) and 4th generation light sources is the demonstration of reliable, high-brightness, high-power injector operation. Ongoing programs that target up to 1 Ampere injector performance at emittance values consistent with the requirements of these applications are described. [...]

Future Directions in Electron Sources / Lewellen, John W
The emittance-compensated rf photoinjector is in the process of evolving from an experiment in and of itself, to a laboratory instrument, to a workhorse component of large user facilities such as next-generation light sources. In recent years the performance achieved by the standard p-mode design has approached the levels predicted by theory and experiment. [...]

Overview on High-Brightness Electron Guns / Lewellen, J W
In an electron storage ring, the quality of the electron beam is generally a function of the ring lattice parameters and has little to do with the source of the electrons. In most electron linear accelerators, the beam brightness is set by the beam source. [...]

Planar-Focusing Cathodes / Lewellen, J W ; Noonan, J
Conventional pi-mode rf photoinjectors typically use magnetic solenoids for emittance compensation. This provides independent focusing strength, but can complicate rf power feed placement, introduce asymmetries (due to coil crossovers), and greatly increase the cost of the photoinjector. [...]

High-Average, High-Peak Current Injector Design / Biedron, S G ; Lewellen, J W ; Virgo, M
There is increasing interest in high-average-power (>100 kW), um-range FELs. These machines require high peak current (~1 kA), modest transverse emittance, and beam energies of ~100 MeV. [...]
