/ Flükiger, Rene (CERN) ; Spina, Tiziana (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Besana, Maria Ilaria (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN)
The aim of this paper is to estimate the change of the superconducting properties Tc, Jc, and Bc2 in the quadrupoles of the future accelerators HiLumi-LHC and FCC, submitted to irradiation by multiple high-energy sources. The estimations are performed based on the number of displacements per atom (dpa), calculated by means of the FLUKA code. [...]

/ Spina, T (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Richter, D (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Flükiger, R (CERN)
Industrial Nb$_{3}$Sn wires with Ti and Ta additives (RRP process) and with Ta additives (PIT process) with a diameter of 1 mm have been irradiated at room temperature with protons of 65 MeV and of 24 GeV at various fluences up to 1×1021 p/m2. A steady increase of Jc vs. [...]

The results of the study of magnetization and dynamic magnetic susceptibility are correlated with changes in the microstructure of superconducting intermetallic Nb$_{3}$Sn plates irradiated at the Kurchatov Institute cyclotron with fast protons with an energy of 12.8 MeV to a fluence of 1 · 1018 cm−2. The dependence of the superconducting transition temperature on the total irradiation dose is determined. [...]

Effect of irradiation with 32-MeV protons on critical parameters of modern Nb$_{3}$Sn-based superconducting composite wires
/ Degtyarenko, P N (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow ; ITAE, Moscow) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Gavrilkin, S Yu (Lebedev Inst.) ; Flükiger, R (CERN) ; Kruglov, V S (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow ; Moscow Phys. Vibrating-sample magnetometry techniques has been used for investigation of the electrophysical characteristics of several types of modern commercial multistrand composite wires based on Nb$_{3}$Sn superconducting compound at temperatures that were measured 4.2, 7, and 12 K in magnetic fields up to 8 T before and after irradiation of the samples by fast (32-MeV) protons to fluences values 3 × 10$^{16}$, 1 × 10$^{17}$, 3 × 10$^{17}$, and 1 × 10$^{18}$ cm$^{–2}$. All samples irradiated to fluences values up to 1 × 10$^{17}$ cm$^{–2}$ exhibited growth of the critical current density, which was most sharply pronounced in strong magnetic fields at lower temperatures. Variation of $T_c$, lattice parameter and atomic ordering in $Nb_3Sn$ platelets irradiated with 12 MeV protons: correlation with the number of induced Frenkel defects
/ Flükiger, R (CERN ; Geneva U.) ; Spina, T (CERN) ; Cerutti, F (CERN) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Zubavichus, Y (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow) ; Ryazanov, A (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow ; Moscow Phys. $Nb_3Sn$ platelets with thicknesses between 0.12 and 0.20 mm produced by a high isostatic pressure process at 1250 °C were irradiated at 300 K with 12 MeV protons. The effects of irradiation on the lattice parameter a, the atomic order parameter S and the transition temperature $T_c$ were measured as a function of proton fluence. [...]

Artificial Pinning in Nb$_3$Sn Wires
/ Spina, Tiziana (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Flukiger, Rene (CERN)
Two different processes are known to create “artificial” pinning centers in superconductors: 1) high energy irradiation; and 2) nanoinclusions. Own results on the critical current density $J_c$ of $Nb_3Sn$ wires after irradiation by protons are compared to the effects obtained by neutrons (on the same wires) and by nanoinclusions from the literature. In order to predict the irradiation effects in the quadrupoles of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider accelerator at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) during operation up to a luminosity of 4000 fb^-1, an irradiation program was carried out on industrial Taand Ti-added Nb$_{3}$Sn wires. Wire samples from the same batch were irradiated with high-energy protons (65 MeV and 24 GeV, up to 1.4×10^21 m^-2) and neutrons (> 0.1 MeV, up to 1.8×10^22 m^-2). [...]

Variation of the Critical Properties of Alloyed Nb-Sn Wires After Proton Irradiation at 65 MeV and 24 GeV
/ Spina, T (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Richter, D (CERN) ; Bordini, B (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Flukiger, R (CERN)
A recent proton irradiation study on Ta and Ti alloyed industrial multifilamentary Nb_3Sn wires has now been extended to fluences up to 1.38 × 10^21 p/m^2, the Bragg peak region being located outside of the wire. In the present work, magnetization measurements were performed up to 14 K and 10 T, to follow and determine with more precision the development of the upper critical field B_c2 with fluence. [...]
