Active dosimetry for VHEE FLASH radiotherapy using beam profile monitors and charge measurements / Rieker, Vilde F (CERN ; Oslo U.) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Stapnes, Steinar (CERN) ; Adli, Erik (Oslo U.) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN) ; Grilj, Veljko (SUBATECH, Nantes) ; Sjobak, Kyrre N (Oslo U.) ; Wroe, Laurence M (CERN) ; Aksoy, Avni (CERN ; Ankara U.) ; Robertson, Cameron S (Oxford U.) et al.
The discovery of the FLASH effect has revealed a high potential for treating cancer more efficiently by sparing healthy tissue. The surge in related medical research activities over the last couple of years has triggered a demand for technology with the capability of generating and measuring ionizing radiation at ultra-high doserates (UHDR). A Compact Inverse Compton Scattering Source Based on X-band Technology and Cavity-enhanced High Average Power Ultrafast Lasers / Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Cormier, Eric (LP2N, Bordeaux) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Dyks, Luke (CERN) ; Granados, Eduardo (CERN) ; Grudiev, Alexej (CERN) ; Mușat, Vlad (CERN) ; Santarelli, Giorgio (LP2N, Bordeaux) ; Stapnes, Steinar (CERN) ; Wang, Ping (CERN) et al.
A high-pulse-current photoinjector followed by a short high-gradient X-band linac and a Fabry-Pérot enhancement cavity are considered as a driver for a compact Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS) source. Using a high-power ultra-short pulse laser operating in burst mode in a Fabry-Pérot enhancement cavity, we show that outcoming photons with a total flux over 10$^{13}$ and energies in the MeV range are achievable. Bubble-beam accelerators: breaking the paradigm / Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Dyks, Luke (CERN) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN) ; Aksoy, Avni (CERN ; Ankara U.) ; Korysko, Pierre (JAI, UK ; CERN) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, UK) ; Tranchedone, Lorenzo (JAI, UK ; CERN)
Most particle accelerators utilize beams with a charge density concentrated in the center of the bunch in real 3-dimensional space and the 6-dimensional phase space. In this work, by enhancing the space-charge forces in the photo-cathode injector of the Compact Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) at CERN, we produce electron bunches with a “bubble-like” shape, with a charge density mostly concentrated on the outside shell. [...]

The CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) has been operating since 2017 as a user facility providing beams for a large variety of experiments. Its RF photocathode-based linear accelerator can accelerate electrons up to 220 MeV with a bunch charge of 0.1-1.5nC with single or up to 150 bunches per train. [...]

Delivering and tailoring high brightness electron beams for a wide range of novel applications is a challenging task in single pass accelerator test facilities. This paper will review beam dynamics challenges at single pass accelerator test facilities in Europe to generate, transport and tailor low- to medium-energy high brightness electron beams for a range of novel applications..

VHEE FLASH sparing effect measured at CLEAR, CERN with DNA damage of pBR322 plasmid as a biological endpoint / Wanstall, Hannah C (Manchester U. ; Daresbury) ; Korysko, Pierre (Oxford U. ; CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfred (CERN) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Bateman, Joseph J (Oxford U., Theor. Ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) irradiation has been shown to have a sparing effect on healthy tissue, an effect known as ‘FLASH’. This effect has been studied across several radiation modalities, including photons, protons and clinical energy electrons, however, very little data is available for the effect of FLASH with Very High Energy Electrons (VHEE). Plastic Scintillator Dosimetry of Ultrahigh Dose-Rate 200 MeV Electrons at CLEAR / Hart, Alexander (Victoria U.) ; Giguère, Cloé (Laval U.) ; Bateman, Joseph (Oxford U.) ; Korysko, Pierre (Oxford U.) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN) ; Rieker, Vilde (CERN ; Oslo U.) ; Esplen, Nolan (Victoria U.) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Dosanjh, Manjit (Oxford U.) ; Beaulieu, Luc (Laval U.) et al.
Very-high-energy electron (VHEE) beams with energies greater than 100 MeV may be promising candidates for FLASH radiotherapy due to their favorable dose distributions and accessibility of ultrahigh dose rates (UHDRs). Combining VHEE with the normal tissue-sparing FLASH effect of UHDR radiotherapy could improve patient outcomes. [...]

A beam position monitor based on Cherenkov diffraction radiation (ChDR BPM) is currently under investigation to disentangle the electromagnetic field of an electron bunch from that of a proton bunch travelling together in time and space in the beam-line of the AWAKE plasma acceleration experiment at CERN. The signals from a horizontal pair of ChDR BPM radiators have been studied under a variety of beam conditions at the CLEAR electron beam test facility. [...]
