A sampling hadronic calorimeter with gaps instrumented with thin MICROMEGAS chambers of small pad size and single bit readout is a candidate for an experiment at a future linear collider. Several MICROMEGAS chambers with 1 cm(2) anode pads were fa bricated using the Bulk technology. [...]

Long-term residual radioactivity in an intermediate-energy proton linac / Blaha, J (CERN) ; La Torre, F P (CERN ; Bern U.) ; Silari, M (CERN) ; Vollaire, J (CERN)
A new 160 MeV H−H− linear accelerator (LINAC4) is being installed at CERN to replace the present 50 MeV LINAC2 as proton injector of the PS Booster (PSB). During operation, the accelerator components will be activated by the beam itself and by the secondary radiation field. [...]

The practical use of an interactive visualization and planning tool for intervention planning in particle accelerator environments with ionizing radiation / Fabry, Thomas (CERN) ; Blaha, Jan (CERN) ; Vanherpe, Liesbeth (CERN) ; Braesch, Christian (Savoie U. (main)) ; Tabourot, Laurent (Savoie U. (main)) ; Feral, Bruno (CERN)
A core issue during the planning of a maintenance intervention in a facility with ionizing radiation is the minimization of the integrated equivalent dose contracted by the maintenance workers during the intervention. In this work, we explore the use of a technical-scientific software program facilitating the intervention planning in irradiated environments using sound mathematical concepts. [...]

Radiation Protection Study for the Shielding Design of the LINAC4 Beam Dump at CERN / Blaha, Jan (CERN) ; Vollaire, Joachim (CERN)
The aim of this study is to determine an optimal shielding of the LINAC4 beam dump fulfilling the radiation protection requirements. Therefore a detailed Monte-Carlo calculation using FLUKA particle transport and interaction code has been performed and the relevant physics quantities, such as particle fluences, neutron energy spectra, residual and prompt dose rates, air and water activation have been evaluated for different LINAC4 operation phases..

Validation of GEANT4 Monte Carlo Models with a Highly Granular Scintillator-Steel Hadron Calorimeter / The CALICE Collaboration
Calorimeters with a high granularity are a fundamental requirement of the Particle Flow paradigm. This paper focuses on the prototype of a hadron calorimeter with analog readout, consisting of thirty-eight scintillator layers alternating with steel absorber planes. [...]

Hadronic energy resolution of a highly granular scintillator-steel hadron calorimeter using software compensation techniques / CALICE Collaboration
The hadronic energy resolution of the CALICE setup, consisting of a silicon tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter, an analog hadron calorimeter and an analog tail catcher has been studied using data taken in 2007 at CERN and simulations. To improve the energy resolution of hadronic showers in the hadron calorimeter and the tail catcher, a weighting procedure based on the energy density of the hadron shower is studied. [...]

Tests of a particle flow algorithm with CALICE test beam data / CALICE Collaboration
The studies presented in this paper provide a first experimental test of the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) concept using data recorded in high granularity calorimeters. Pairs of overlaid pion showers from CALICE 2007 test beam data are reconstructed by the PandoraPFA program developed to implement PFA for a future lepton collider. [...]

The recent progress in R&D; of the Micromegas detectors for hadronic calorimetry including new engineering-technical solutions, electronics development, and accompanying simulation studies with emphasis on the comparison of the physics performance of the analog and digital readout is described. The developed prototypes are with 2 bit digital readout to exploit the Micromegas proportional mode and thus improve the calorimeter linearity. [...]
