Quench Protection of Stacks of No-Insulation HTS Pancake Coils by Capacitor Discharge / Mulder, Tim (CERN) ; Wozniak, Mariusz (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN)
No-Insulation (NI) technology for HTS coils has been around for a decade and is a proven method to protect small pancake coils in case of a quench. Without turn-to-turn insulation, excess current can bypass a sudden resistive part, thereby possibly preventing damaging the conductor locally. [...]

An Open-Source Finite Element Quench Simulation Tool for Superconducting Magnets / Vitrano, Andrea (CERN) ; Wozniak, Mariusz (CERN) ; Schnaubelt, Erik (CERN ; Darmstadt, Tech. Hochsch.) ; Mulder, Tim (CERN) ; Ravaioli, Emmanuele (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN)
An open-source Finite Element Quench Simulator (FiQuS) is being developed as part of the STEAM framework following CERN's open science policy (CERN, 2022). The tool is based solely on open-source software and uses Python to generate geometries and meshes with Gmsh and compute solutions with GetDP. [...]

External Coil Coupled Loss Induced Quench (E-CLIQ) System for the Protection of LTS Magnets / Mulder, Tim (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Ravaioli, Emmanuele (CERN) ; Schnaubelt, Erik (CERN ; Darmstadt, Tech. Hochsch.) ; Wozniak, Mariusz (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN)
The next generation of Nb 3 Sn accelerator magnets are pushed to higher magnetic fields, higher stored energy and higher energy density. This brings additional challenges when it comes to quench protection. [...]

Towards a Muon Collider / Accettura, Carlotta (CERN) ; Adams, Dean (Rutherford) ; Agarwal, Rohit (UC, Berkeley (main)) ; Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Aimè, Chiara (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Amapane, Nicola (INFN, Turin ; Turin U.) ; Amorim, David (CERN) ; Andreetto, Paolo (INFN, Padua) ; Anulli, Fabio (INFN, Rome) ; Appleby, Robert (Manchester U.) et al.
A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. [...]

Self-Protecting HTS Current Lead-Demonstration of a New Technology / Dudarev, Alexey (CERN) ; Blokker, Joris Willem (Delft Tech. U.) ; Bykovskiy, Nikolay (CERN) ; Mulder, Tim (CERN) ; Pais Da Silva, Helder F (CERN) ; ten Kate, Herman H J (CERN)
A straight forward solution to reduce the heat load of Current Leads to superconducting magnets operating at 4 K is the use of high temperature superconductors (HTS) thereby eliminating the ohmic heating at the range below 50–77 K. The heat input from the current leads is then determined by heat conduction in the HTS section only, leading to some factor 10 reduction in the heat load in comparison to fully normal conducting conventional leads. Recent Progress in the Development of CORC Cable-In-Conduit Conductors / Mulder, Tim (CERN) ; Weiss, Jeremy (Colorado U.) ; van der Laan, Danko (Colorado U.) ; Dudarev, Alexey (CERN) ; Kate, Herman ten (CERN)
In recent years, three unique ReBCO-CORC CICC samples with six-around-one cable layout were developed as technology demonstrators at CERN in collaboration with Advanced Conductor Technologies. The tests of these conductors at low temperature in external magnetic field yielded very promising results, but also showed several issues requiring improvement. [...]

New bridge temperature sensor for superconducting magnets and other cryogenic applications / Dudarev, Alexey (CERN) ; Bremer, Johan (CERN) ; Mentink, Matthias (CERN) ; Mulder, Tim (Twente U., Enschede) ; ter Harmsel, Jeroen (Twente U., Enschede) ; ten Kate, Herman H J (CERN)
A few hundred temperature sensors are used to monitor the temperature behavior of the gigantic ATLAS toroid superconducting magnet system during cool down and normal operation. In order to guarantee good sensitivity of temperature measurements in the range from liquid helium to room temperature, two types of sensors are positioned at the same location: platinum resistance thermometers for the range 30–300 K and carbon composition resistors (Allen-Bradley) for the 4–30 K range. A 2.5-T, 1.25-m Free Bore Superconducting Magnet for the Magnum-PSI Linear Plasma Generator / Eck, Hans J N van (Eindhoven, DIFFER) ; Kate, Herman H J ten (CERN) ; Dudarev, Alexey V (CERN) ; Mulder, Tim (CERN) ; Hervé, Alain (Wisconsin U., Madison)
DIFFER's main experiment, Magnum-PSI, is the only laboratory setup in the world capable of exposing materials to plasma conditions similar to those of future fusion reactors. The success of the Magnum-PSI experiment depends on the generation of a 2.5-T magnetic field without restricting the diagnostic access and operational aspects of the experiment. [...]
