Status of a European Standard for the protection of helium cryostats against excessive pressure
/ Grohmann, S (KIT, Karlsruhe, IKP ; KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Barthélémy, H (Air Liquide Head Office, Paris) ; Down, R (Rutherford) ; Ercolani, E (U. Grenoble Alpes) ; Fournel, J-L (Air Liquide, Sassenage) ; Henriques, A (CERN) ; Krichler, M (Bilfinger Noell GmbH, Wurzburg) ; Otte, W (Air Liquide Deutschland GmbH, Krefeld) ; Parma, V (CERN) ; Pengo, R (INFN, Legnaro) et al.
The overpressure protection of various types of cryogenic vessels is covered by a number
of International Standards. Helium cryostats, however, include additional components such as
superconducting magnets and cavities, electrical heaters and control valves with associated
piping, which significantly influence the potential risk. [...]

Measurement of heat flux in multi-layer insulated helium cryostats after loss of insulating vacuum
/ Weber, C (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Henriques, A (CERN) ; Schirle, S (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Grohmann, S (KIT, Karlsruhe)
The dimensioning of pressure relief devices (PRD) for cryogenic pressure equipment requires knowledge on the heat input at the maximum credible incident. In helium cryostats, this situation is typically defined by the loss of insulating vacuum (LIV), where the heat load is induced by desublimation and condensation of atmospheric air on the cryogenic surface. Study on the heat transfer of helium cryostats following loss of insulating vacuum
/ Weber, C (KIT, Karlsruhe ; Karlsruhe U., ITP) ; Henriques, A (CERN) ; Grohmann, S (Karlsruhe U., ITP ; Karlsruhe U.)
The dimensioning of pressure relief devices (PRD) for helium cryostats requires detailed knowledge of the pressure increase during incidents. In case of the loss of insulating vacuum (LIV), this is induced by heat input due to deposition of atmospheric air on the surface of the helium vessel. [...]

Safety studies on vacuum insulated liquid helium cryostats
/ Weber, C (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Henriques, A (CERN) ; Zoller, C (PSI, Villigen) ; Grohmann, S (KIT, Karlsruhe)
The loss of insulating vacuum is often considered as a reasonable foreseeable accident for the dimensioning of cryogenic safety relief devices (SRD). The cryogenic safety test facility PICARD was designed at KIT to investigate such events. [...]

First experimental data of the cryogenic safety test facility PICARD
/ Heidt, C (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Henriques, A (CERN) ; Stamm, M (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Grohmann, S (KIT, Karlsruhe)
The test facility PICARD, which stands for Pressure Increase in Cryostats and Analysis of Relief Devices, has been designed and constructed for cryogenic safety experiments. With a cryogenic liquid volume of 100 L, a nominal design pressure of 16 bar(g) and the capacity of measuring helium mass flow rates through safety relief devices up to 4 kg/s, the test facility allows the systematic investigation of hazardous incidents in cryostats under realistic conditions. European standardization activities on safety of liquid helium cryostats
/ Grohmann, Steffen (speaker) (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology)
This talk gives a general overview on the challenges of designing safety units for liquid helium cryostats with regard to existing industry standards. It reviews the work of a national working group that published the technical guideline DIN SPEC 4683 in April 2015, which is dedicated to the particular conditions in liquid helium cryostats. [...]
