Assessment of material identification errors, image quality and radiation doses using small animal spectral photon-counting CT / MARS Collaboration
Photon-counting CT offers the potential to provide new diagnostic information. In this study, we sought to determine the interplay between material identification errors, image quality indicators, and radiation doses using photon-counting spectral CT, and to determine whether this relationship is replicated in spectral CT scans of mice. Assessment of metal implant induced artefacts using photon counting spectral CT / Amma, Maya Rajeswari (Otago U.) ; Butler, Anthony P H (MARS Bioimaging ; Canterbury U. ; Otago U.) ; Raja, Aamir Y (Otago U.) ; Bamford, Benjamin (Otago U.) ; Butler, Philip (MARS Bioimaging ; Canterbury U. ; Otago U.) ; Walker, E Peter (Otago U.) ; Matanaghi, Aysouda (Otago U.) ; Adebileje, Sikiru A (Otago U. ; Canterbury U.) ; Anderson, Nigel (Otago U.) ; Anjomrouz, Marzieh (MARS Bioimaging) et al.
The aim is to perform qualitative and quantitative assessment of metal induced artefacts of small titanium biomaterials using photon counting spectral CT. The energy binning feature of some photon counting detectors enables the measured spectrum to be segmented into low, mid and high energy bins in a single exposure. [...]

Quantitative imaging of excised osteoarthritic cartilage using spectral CT / Rajendran, Kishore (Otago U.) ; Löbker, Caroline (Otago U.) ; Schon, Benjamin S (Twente U., Enschede) ; Bateman, Christopher J (Otago U.) ; Younis, Raja Aamir (Otago U.) ; de Ruiter, Niels J A (Otago U.) ; Chernoglazov, Alex I (Canterbury U.) ; Ramyar, Mohsen (Otago U.) ; Hooper, Gary J (Otago U.) ; Butler, Anthony P H (Otago U. ; CERN ; MARS Bioimaging, New Zealand) et al.
Objectives: To quantify iodine uptake in articular cartilage as a marker of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content using multi-energy spectral CT. Methods: We incubated a 25-mm strip of excised osteoarthritic human tibial plateau in 50 % ionic iodine contrast and imaged it using a small-animal spectral scanner with a cadmium telluride photon-processing detector to quantify the iodine through the thickness of the articular cartilage. We imaged both spectroscopic phantoms and osteoarthritic tibial plateau samples. [...]

Energy Calibration of the Pixels of Spectral X-ray Detectors / Panta, Raj Kumar (Otago U.) ; Walsh, Michael F (MARS Bioimaging Ltd., Christchurch) ; Bell, Stephen T (MARS Bioimaging Ltd., Christchurch) ; Anderson, Nigel G (Otago U.) ; Butler, Anthony P (Otago U. ; Canterbury U. ; CERN ; MARS Bioimaging Ltd., Christchurch) ; Butler, Philip H (Canterbury U. ; CERN ; MARS Bioimaging Ltd., Christchurch)
The energy information acquired using spectral X-ray detectors allows noninvasive identification and characterization of chemical components of a material. To achieve this, it is important that the energy response of the detector is calibrated. [...]
