Tools for integrated simulation of collimation processes in Xsuite
/ Demetriadou, Despina (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Van der Veken, Frederik (CERN)
The existing code for particle scattering and tracking in collimation systems integrated in SixTrack, called K2, was migrated from the current software in FORTRAN, to a new Python/C interface integrated in the Xsuite tracking code that is being developed at CERN. This is an essential step towards a full integration of collimation studies using Xtrack, and will allow profiting from GPU computing advances and the BOINC volunteer computing network. [...]

Crystal collimation of heavy-ion beams
/ Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Mazzolari, Andrea (INFN, Pisa) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Lindstrom, Bjorn (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (IES, Montpellier) ; Dewhurst, Kay (CERN) ; Bandiera, Laura (INFN, Pisa) et al.
An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for lead–ion beams that will already reach their high-luminosity target intensity upgrade in the LHC Run 3 (2022-2025). While certain effects like e-cloud, beam-beam, impedance, inject and dump protection are relaxed with ion beams, halo collimation becomes a challenge, as the conventional multi-stage collimation system is about two orders of magnitude less efficient than for proton beams. Xsuite is a modular simulation package bringing to a single flexible and modern framework capabilities of different tools developed at CERN in the past decades notably MAD-X Sixtrack Sixtracklib COMBI and PyHEADTAIL. The suite consists of a set of Python modules (Xobjects, Xpart, Xtrack, Xcoll, Xfields, Xdeps) that can be flexibly combined together and with other accelerator-specific and general-purpose python tools to study complex simulation scenarios. Recent Developments with the New Tools for Collimation Simulations in Xsuite
/ Van der Veken, Frederik (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Broggi, Giacomo (CERN ; Rome U., La Sapienza, Dip. di Astron.) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Demetriadou, Despina (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Hugo, Gabrielle (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Lindström, Bjorn (CERN) et al.
Simulations of single-particle tracking involving collimation systems need dedicated tools to perform the different tasks needed. These include the accurate description of particle-matter interactions when a tracked particle impacts a collimator jaw; a detailed aperture model to identify the longitudinal location of losses; and others. Revised Collimation Configuration for the Updated FCC-hh Layout
/ Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Pérez Segurana, Gustavo (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Risselada, Thys (CERN)
The collimation system for the hadron Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) must handle proton beams with an unprecedented nominal beam energy and stored beam energy in excess of 8 GJ, and protect the superconducting magnets and other sensitive equipment while ensuring a high operational efficiency. The recent development of the 16-dipole lattice baseline for the FCC-hh, and the associated layout changes, has necessitated an adaptation of the collimation system. [...]

An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to meet the challenges of the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. A first stage of the HL-LHC upgrade was already deployed during the last LHC Long Shutdown, offering important improvements of the collimation cleaning, a significant reduction of the impedance contribution and better cleaning of collisional debris, in particular for ion-ion collisions. The Future Circular Collider electron-positron (FCC-ee) is a proposed high-energy lepton collider that aims to reach unprecedented precision in the measurements of fundamental particles.
