/ Manczak, Jerzy (CERN) ; Frasca, Alessandro (CERN) ; Portone, Alfredo (Fusion for Energy, Barcelona) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Rogers, Chris (Daresbury) ; Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Schulte, Daniel (CERN) ; Calzolari, Daniele (CERN) ; Saura Esteban, Francisco Javier (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) et al.
Muon production in the multi-TeV muon collider studied by the International Muon Collider Collaboration is planned to be performed with a high-power proton beam interacting with a fixed target. The design of the target area comes with a set of challenges related to the radiation load to front-end equipment. [...]

Towards a Muon Collider

A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. [...]

Progress on the Upgrade of EDIPO, a 15 T Large Aperture Dipole

The upgraded magnet assembly of the EDIPO test facility aims at generating 15 T at 4.2 K and 85% of short sample limit in a large rectangular aperture and over a uniform field length of 1000 mm. During 2020 the design studies have concentrated on two flared-end block-coil design options with four double-pancake coils, two per pole. [...]

In 2018, two structures have been proposed with the goal of replacing the magnet EDIPO that stopped operating in 2016. These two solutions were designed to generate a field of 15 T on an aperture of 100 × 150 mm$^{2}$ at 4.2 K by using Nb3Sn superconducting Rutherford cable. [...]

Magnetic and mechanical design of a 15-T large aperture dipole magnet for cable testing
/ Sarasola, Xabier (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bruzzone, Pierluigi (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Ferracin, Paolo (CERN) ; Araujo, Douglas Martins (CERN) ; de Rijk, Gijs (CERN) ; Cau, Francesca (Fusion for Energy, Barcelona) ; Portone, Alfredo (Fusion for Energy, Barcelona) ; Testoni, Pietro (Fusion for Energy, Barcelona) ; Prestemon, Soren (LBNL, Berkeley) et al.
A large aperture Nb$_3$Sn dipole is proposed to replace the magnet assembly of EDIPO, which was irreversibly damaged in 2016. The goal is to generate a background field of 15 T at 4.2 K in a clear aperture of approximately 100×150 mm$^2$ and over a uniform length of 1000 mm in order to test superconducting cables for both fusion and high-energy physics applications. Advances in the performance of low and high temperature superconductors enable the development of advanced magnets for a range of applications, including tokamaks for fusion energy, dipoles and quadrupoles for hadron colliders. The capability of testing prototype cables and insert coils at high field is critical to these developments. [...]

The European dipole (EDIPO), currently under construction, will provide background magnetic fields of up to 12.5 T for tests of ITER high-current superconducting cables. The EDIPO winding consists of 7 x 2 double layers of Nb$_{3}$SN cable-in-conduit conductors with forced flow cooling of supercritical helium. [...]

Computations of AC Loss in the ITER Magnets during Fast Field Transients
/ Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Bruzzone, Pierluigi (EPFL-CRPP, Fusion Technology Division, Villigen PSI, Switzerland) ; Lister, Jonathan B (EPFL-CRPP, Lausanne, Switzerland) ; Marinucci, Claudio (EPFL-CRPP, Fusion Technology Division, Villigen PSI, Switzerland) ; Portone, Alfredo (EFDA-CSU, Garching, Germany)
The calculation of AC loss due to the control currents in ITER is a cumbersome task. The reason is that control transients require small field changes (0.1 T or less) at moderate frequency (up to 10 Hz), where effects of partial penetration of the filaments and shielding are important and need to be taken into account to produce sound AC loss estimates.
