High-energy hadron colliders with multi-TeV centre-of-mass energies require high-field superconducting magnets. Examples include the large hadron collider (LHC) and its high-luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC), as well as future projects such as the future circular collider (FCC-hh) and super proton–proton collider (SPPC). In response to the 2020 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) Feasibility Study was launched as an international collaboration hosted by CERN. The FCC ‘integrated programme’, described in this report, in a first stage consists of a highest-luminosity electron-positron collider, FCC-ee, serving as Higgs, top and electroweak factory, with a subsequent energy-frontier proton-proton collider, FCC-hh, as the second stage. The FCC-ee is designed to operate at four baseline centre-of-mass energies, corresponding to the Z pole, the WW pair production threshold, the ZH production peak, and the top/anti-top production threshold, always delivering the highest possible luminosities to four experiments. Future Circular Collider Feasibility Study Report Volume 1 : Physics and Experiments
/ Benedikt, M. (CERN) ; Zimmermann, F. (CERN) ; Auchmann, B. (CERN ; PSI, Villigen) ; Bartmann, W. (CERN) ; Burnet, J.P. (CERN) ; Carli, C. (CERN) ; Chancé, A. (IRFU, Saclay) ; Craievich, P. (PSI, Villigen) ; Giovannozzi, M. (CERN) ; Grojean, C. (DESY ; Humboldt U., Berlin) et al.
Volume 1 of the FCC Feasibility Report presents an overview of the physics case, experimental programme, and detector concepts for the Future Circular Collider (FCC). This volume outlines how the FCC would address some of the most profound open questions in particle physics, from precision studies of the Higgs and EW bosons and of the top quark, to the exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model. Resonant spin depolarization at the test facility KARA: overview of recent efforts

The Karlsruhe research accelerator KARA offers a setup to measure the beam energy with resonant spin depolarization. The depolarization is excited by the stripline kickers of the bunch-by-bunch feedback system and the resonant frequency is measured via change in Touschek lifetime. [...]

Investigations on NbTi superconducting racetrack coils under pulsed-current excitations

One of the key issues in the technology of superconductors is the protection against quenches. When designing a superconductor as a magnet, a coil or even current leads, the design should be made such that the superconductor withstands all operational conditions as fast discharges, pulsed loads or even rapid transient background fields.Computational modeling of pulsed-current characterization in a self-field NbTi racetrack sample coil has been performed using the finite element modelling software Opera as a step towards understanding the thermal and electromagnetic processes during a quench. Design and Manufacturing of an HTS Helical Undulator Demonstrator for Compact FELs
/ Richter, S C (CERN ; KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Bernhard, A (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Müller, A S (KIT, Karlsruhe)
Among all superconducting undulator geometries, a helical undulator provides a very compact geometry and further is more effective in producing synchrotron radiation, providing circularly polarized photons, which are widely usable for synchrotron radiation users. These characteristics make it a very attractive option for realizing more compact free-electron lasers, requiring a combination of short-period and high-field undulators to produce coherent light up to X-rays. For the accelerator-based future of high energy physics at the energy frontier, CERN started to investigate a 92 km circumference Future Circular Collider (FCC), as e⁺/e⁻ collider the FCC-ee will operate at beam energies up to 182.5 GeV. Beside the machine operational aspects, beam instrumentation will play a key role in verifying and optimizing the machine to achieve the ambitious beam parameters and quality. [...]
