Merlin++, a flexible and feature-rich accelerator physics and particle tracking library / Appleby, Robert B. (U. Manchester (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Barlow, Roger J. (Huddersfield U.) ; Kruecker, Dirk (DESY) ; Molson, James (CERN) ; Rowan, Scott (Huddersfield U.) ; Tygier, Sam (U. Manchester (main)) ; Rafique, Haroon (CERN) ; Walker, Nicholas (DESY) ; Wolski, Andrzej (U. Liverpool (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
Merlin++ is a C++ charged-particle tracking library developed for the simulation and analysis of complex beam dynamics within high energy particle accelerators. Accurate simulation and analysis of particle dynamics is an essential part of the design of new particle accelerators, and for the optimization of existing ones. [...]

PROTON-BEAM MACRO-PARTICLE INTERACTION: BEAM DUMPS AND QUENCHES / Auchmann, Bernhard (CERN) ; Baer, Thomas Martin ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Riegler, Werner (CERN) ; Rowan, Scott ; Schindler, Heinrich (CERN) ; Schmidt, Rudiger (GSI - Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung GmbH (DE)) ; Zimmermann, Frank (CERN)
We derive a model for the time evolution of beam losses due to macro particles falling into the LHC proton beam. [...]

Modelling and Analysis of the Electrical and Thermal Transients following the Quench of a Superconducting Electromagnetic Coil within the Large Hadron Collider’s Inner Triplet System / Rowan, Scott
Operators of complex machinery must always think ahead to consider possible future operational threats to, or limitations of, the system [...]

LHC main dipole magnet circuits: sustaining near-nominal beam energies / Rowan, Scott
Crossing the Franco-Swiss border, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), designed to collide 7 TeV proton beams, is the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator the operation of which was originally intended to commence in 2008 [...]

Qualification of the Bypass Continuity of the Main Dipole Magnet Circuits of the LHC / Rowan, Scott (CERN) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (CERN) ; Brodzinski, Krzysztof (CERN) ; Charifoulline, Zinour (CERN) ; Panev, Bozhidar Ivanov (CERN) ; Pfeffer, Howard (Fermilab) ; Rodriguez-Mateos, Felix (CERN) ; Romera, Iván (CERN) ; Schmidt, Ruediger (CERN) ; Siemko, Andrzej (CERN) et al.
The copper-stabilizer continuity measurement (CSCM) was devised in order to attain complete electrical qualification of all busbar joints, lyres, and the magnet bypass connections in the 13~kA circuits of the LHC. A CSCM is carried out at 20 K, i.e., just above the critical temperature, with resistive magnets. [...]

Interactions between Macroparticles and High-Energy Proton Beams / Rowan, Scott (CERN) ; Apollonio, Andrea (CERN) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Picha, Ondrej (CERN) ; Riegler, Werner (CERN) ; Schindler, Heinrich (CERN) ; Schmidt, Ruediger (CERN) ; Zimmermann, Frank (CERN)
A known threat to the availability of the LHC is the interaction of macroparticles (dust particles) with the LHC proton beam. At the foreseen beam energy of 6.5 TeV during Run 2, quench margins in the superconducting magnets will be 2-3 times lower, and beam losses due such interactions may result in magnet quenches. [...]

First Operational Experience of DSL Based Analysis Modules for LHC Hardware Commissioning / Zerlauth, Markus (CERN) ; Aguilera-Padilla, Cesar (CERN) ; Audrain, Maxime (CERN) ; Charifoulline, Zinour (CERN) ; Dragu, Matei (CERN) ; Garnier, Jean-Christophe (CERN) ; Heil, Raphaela (CERN) ; Koza, Mateusz (CERN) ; Krol, Kamil (CERN) ; Martins Ribeiro, Tiago (CERN) et al.
The Large Hadron Collider powering systems have been tested and commissioned before to start the second run of physics production. This commissioning used for the first time analysis modules defined directly by system experts in an english-like domain specific language. [...]
