Fracture Toughness, Radiation Hardness, and Processibility of Polymers for Superconducting Magnets
/ Gaarud, Anders (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Parragh, David Mate (CERN) ; Clement, Sébastien (CERN) ; Bertsch, Jacob (CERN) ; Urscheler, Cedric (CERN) ; Piccin, Roland (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN) ; Pezzullo, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Lach, Ralf (Julich, Forschungszentrum)
High fracture toughness at cryogenic temperature and radiation hardness can be conflicting requirements for the resins for the impregnation of superconducting magnet coils. The fracture toughness of different epoxy-resin systems at room temperature (RT) and at 77 K was measured, and their toughness was compared with that determined for a polyurethane, polycarbonate (PC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). CERN Proton Irradiation Facility (IRRAD) Data Management, Control and Monitoring System Infrastructure for post-LS2 Experiments
/ Gkotse, Blerina (CERN ; Paris, Ecole des Mines) ; Jouvelot, Pierre (Paris, Ecole des Mines) ; Pezzullo, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN)
Since upgrades of the CERN Large Hadron Collider are planned and design studies for a post-LHC particle accelerator are ongoing, it is key to ensure that the detectors and electronic components used in the CERN experiments and accelerators can withstand the high amount of radiation produced during particle collisions. To comply with this requirement, scientists perform radiation testing experiments, which consist in exposing these components to high levels of particle radiation to simulate the real operational conditions. [...]

Effect of Irradiation Temperature and Atmosphere on Aging of Epoxy Resins for Superconducting Magnets
/ Parragh, David Mate (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Martin, Noémie (Lyon U.) ; Piccin, Roland (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN) ; Pezzullo, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Lellinger, Dirk (Unlisted, DE)
The superconducting magnets of future particle accelerators will be exposed to high
irradiation doses at cryogenic temperatures. To investigate the effect of irradiation temperature
and atmosphere on the aging behavior, we have characterized the changes in thermomechanical
properties of six epoxy resins for potential use in superconducting magnets after irradiation up to
20 MGy in ambient air, inert gas, and liquid helium. [...]

Absolute calibration of BSI monitors in the SPS North Area at CERN
/ Parsons França, Luana (CERN ; Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN) ; Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Philippon, Florent (CERN) ; Pezzullo, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Zhang, H D (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Bernhard, Johannes (CERN) ; Van Dijk, Maarten (CERN) et al.
Developments in current and future experiments in the SPS North Area (NA) and PS East Area (EA) fixed target beam lines at CERN, including the “Physics Beyond Colliders” (PBC) program, require accurate determination of the number of protons on target (POT). The re-calibration of Beam Secondary Emission Intensity monitors (BSI), recently completed in one of the NA branches, reduced the estimated uncertainty on the absolute POT to a few percent. [...]

Feasibility of Slow-Extracted High-Energy Ions From the CERN Proton Synchrotron for CHARM
/ Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; Charitonidis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN) ; Delrieux, Marc (CERN) ; Duraffourg, Michel (CERN) ; Emriskova, Natalia (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) et al.
The CHARM High-energy Ions for Micro Electronics Reliability Assurance (CHIMERA) working group at CERN is investigating the feasibility of delivering high energy ion beams to the CHARM facility for the study of radiation effects to electronics components engineered to operate in harsh radiation environments, such as space or high-energy accelerators. The Proton Synchrotron has the potential of delivering the required high energy and high-Z (in this case, Pb) ions for radiation tests over the relevant range of Linear Energy Transfer of ~ 10 - 40 MeV cm²/mg with a > 1 mm penetration depth in silicon, specifically for single event effect tests. A Beam Profile Monitor for High Energy Proton Beams Using Microfabrication Techniques
/ Mateu, Isidre (CERN) ; Bouvet, Didier (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN) ; Gilardi, Antonio (CERN) ; Gkotse, Blerina (CERN) ; Mapelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Meskova, Viktoria (CERN) ; Pezzullo, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN) ; Sallese, Jean-Michel (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) et al.
In High Energy Physics experiments it is a common practice to expose electronic components and systems to particle beams, in order to assess their level of radiation tolerance when operating in a radiation environment. One of the facilities used for such tests is the Proton Irradiation Facility (IRRAD) at CERN. [...]

The IRRAD Proton Irradiation Facility Control, Data Management and Beam Diagnostic Systems: An Outlook of the Major Upgrades Beyond the CERN Long Shutdown 2

The IRRAD proton irradiation facility at CERN was built during the Long Shutdown 1 (LS1) to address the irradiation experiment needs of the community working for the High-Luminosity (HL) upgrade of the LHC. The present IRRAD is an upgrade of a historical service at CERN that, since the 90’s, exploits the high-intensity 24 GeV/c PS proton beam for radiation-hardness studies of detector, accelerator and semiconductor components and materials. / Gkotse, Blerina (CERN and MINES ParisTech PSL Research University,) ; Gorine, Georgi (CERN) ; Jouvelot, Pierre (MINES ParisTech PSL Research University) ; Pezzullo, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN)
AIDA-2020 is an EU-funded project about Advanced European Infrastructures for Detectors at Accelerators involving about 60 institutes in 24 EU countries. Within this project, the Work Package 15 (WP15) deals with beam and irradiation test facilities, infrastructures dedicated to the qualification of particle detectors, materials, and components prior to their installation in High-Energy Physics (HEP) experiments.
