This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the third International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to A-A, which took place in August 2019 in Lund, Sweden. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field and try to come up with concrete suggestions for how to make progress on both the experimental and theoretical sides. A group of Early-Career Researchers (ECRs) has been given a mandate from the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) to debate the topics of the current European Strategy Update (ESU) for Particle Physics and to summarise the outcome in a brief document [1]. A full-day debate with 180 delegates was held at CERN, followed by a survey collecting quantitative input. [...]

Robust Independent Validation of Experiment and Theory: Rivet version 3 / Bierlich, Christian (DARK Cosmology Ctr. ; Lund U.) ; Buckley, Andy (Glasgow U.) ; Butterworth, Jonathan (University Coll. First released in 2010, the Rivet library forms an important repository for analysis code, facilitating comparisons between measurements of the final state in particle collisions and theoretical calculations of those final states. We give an overview of Rivet's current design and implementation, its uptake for analysis preservation and physics results, and summarise recent developments including propagation of MC systematic-uncertainty weights, heavy-ion and $ep$ physics, and systems for detector emulation. Report from Working Group 5 : Future physics opportunities for high-density QCD at the LHC with heavy-ion and proton beams / Citron, Z. (Ben Gurion U. of Negev) ; Dainese, A. (INFN, Padua) ; Grosse-Oetringhaus, J.F. (CERN) ; Jowett, J.M. (CERN) ; Lee, Y.-J. (MIT) ; Wiedemann, U.A. (CERN) ; Winn, M. (AIM, Saclay ; Orsay, LAL) ; Andronic, A. (Munster U.) ; Bellini, F. (CERN) ; Bruna, E. (INFN, Turin) et al.
The future opportunities for high-density QCD with ion and proton beams at the LHC are presented. Four major scientific goals are identified: the characterisation of the macroscopic long wavelength Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) properties with unprecedented precision, the investigation of the microscopic parton dynamics underlying QGP properties, the development of a unified picture of particle production and QCD dynamics from small (pp) to large (nucleus–nucleus) systems, the exploration of parton densities in nuclei in a broad (x, Q2) kinematic range and the search for the possible onset of parton saturation. Novel tools and observables for jet physics in heavy-ion collisions / Andrews, Harry Arthur (Birmingham U.) ; d'Enterria, David (CERN) ; Apolinario, Liliana (CMAF, Lisbon ; Lisbon, IST) ; Bertens, Redmer Alexander (Tennessee U.) ; Bierlich, Christian (Lund U. ; Bohr Inst.) ; Cacciari, Matteo (Diderot U., Paris ; Paris, LPTHE) ; Chen, Yi (CERN) ; Chien, Yang-Ting (MIT, Cambridge, CTP) ; Mendez, Leticia Cunqueiro (Oak Ridge ; Tennessee U.) ; Deak, Michal (Cracow, INP) et al.
Studies of fully-reconstructed jets in heavy-ion collisions aim at extracting thermodynamical and transport properties of hot and dense QCD matter. Recently, a plethora of new jet substructure observables have been theoretically and experimentally developed that provide novel precise insights on the modifications of the parton radiation pattern induced by a QCD medium.
