/ Söderström, Daniel (CERN) ; Aguiar, Ygor (CERN ; Jean Monnet U.) ; Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; Canesse, Auriane (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Prelipcean, Daniel (CERN ; Tech. U., Munich (main)) ; Alía, Rubén García (CERN)
Electronic systems distributed along high-energy particle accelerators need rigorous radiation hardness qualifications to ensure adequate availability of the beam. This work presents the radiation levels on a distributed system, featuring a commercial Cypress 90-nm memory, which is deployed around the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest accelerator within the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Overview of the radiation levels in the CERN accelerator complex after LS2
/ Canesse, Auriane (CERN) ; Zimmaro, Alessandro (CERN) ; Prelipcean, Daniel (CERN) ; Ricci, Daniel (CERN) ; Di Francesca, Diego (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN)
The PSB, PS, and SPS accelerators at CERN provide high-energy proton and ion beams to a wide range of experiments, from fixed targets to the world’s biggest particle accelerator: the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In 2021 and 2022, their beams have reached unprecedented intensities thanks to the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) undertaken during the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) in preparation of the High-Luminosity (HL) LHC era. The HEARTS EU Project and Its Initial Results on Fragmented High-Energy Heavy-Ion Single-Event Effects Testing
/ García Alía, Rubén (CERN) ; Waets, Andreas (CERN ; Zurich U.) ; Coronetti, Andrea (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Bilko, Kacper (CERN ; Jean Monnet U.) ; Delrieux, Marc (CERN) ; Emriskova, Natalia (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Johnson, Eliott (CERN) ; Klimek, Karolina (CERN) et al.
We perform single-event effect (SEE) tests with well-characterized fully fragmented (i.e., beyond Bragg peak) high-energy heavy-ion beams and compare the results with those expected from conventional, mono-linear energy transfer (mono-LET) measurements, showing a satisfactory level of agreement between the two. This compliance paves the way for the exploitation of simulation tools for accurately quantifying the ion fragmentation impact on SEE rates for both ground-level testing conditions and space galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) environments, with electronics operating behind significant thicknesses of shielding. Latest FLUKA developments
/ Hugo, Gabrielle (CERN) ; Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Calzolari, Daniele (CERN ; U. Padua (main)) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Ciccotelli, Alessia (CERN ; U. The FLUKA Monte Carlo code has recently undergone significant enhancements, driven by needs from its user community. Key improvements are discussed, such as a new point-wise treatment for the interactions of low-energy neutrons, the incorporation of a new model for nuclear elastic scattering of protons below 250 MeV, explicit generation of synchrotron radiation photons during charged particle tracking, a revised modeling approach for coherent effects in bent crystals, and the addition of arc-DPA scoring. Characterization of Fragmented Ultrahigh-Energy Heavy Ion Beam and Its Effects on Electronics Single-Event Effect Testing

Ultrahigh-energy (UHE) (>5 GeV/n) heavy ion beams exhibit different properties when compared to standard and high-energy ion beams. Most notably, fragmentation is a fundamental feature of the beam that may have important implications for electronics testing given the ultrahigh energies and, hence, ranges, preserved by the fragments. Radiation levels from a beam gas curtain instrument at the LHC at CERN
/ Prelipcean, Daniel (CERN) ; Sequeiro, Cristina (CERN) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Ady, Marton (CERN) ; Sedlacek, Ondrej (CERN) ; Veness, Raymond (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN)
A prototype Beam Gas Curtain (BGC) monitor was installed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN to provide 2D images of the transverse beam profile during the ongoing Run 3 (2022 to date) and in view of the High Luminosity LHC upgrade (HL-LHC). By design, the BGC operation generates collisions between the beam particles and an injected gas jet proportionally to the beam intensity and the gas density, possibly causing radiation-induced issues to the downstream LHC equipment. Towards a Timepix3 Radiation Monitor for the Accelerator Mixed Radiation Field: Characterisation with Protons and Alphas from 0.6 MeV to 5.6 MeV

U.) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Slipukhin, Ivan (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Lucsanyi, David (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Sandberg, Hampus (CERN) ; Storey, James (CERN) ; Martin-Holgado, Pedro (CNA, Seville) ; Romero-Maestre, Amor (CNA, Seville) ; Morilla García, Yolanda (CNA, Seville) ; García Alía, Rubén (CERN)
A Timepix3 detector with a 300 silicon sensor has been studied as a novel radiation monitor for the mixed radiation field at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. This work describes a test campaign carried out at Centro Nacional de Aceleradores with quasi-mono energetic protons (alphas) from 0.6 (1) to 5 (5.6) MeV, where orthogonal irradiations are used to obtain an energy calibration, and a low-energy angular scan to estimate the front dead layer thickness of the sensor. LHC Triplet Task Force Report

The excellent performance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the extension of Run 3 by one year have led to a significant increase of the expected integrated luminosity by the end of its operation and before the start of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), exceeding the design LHC integrated luminosity of 300 fb−1 for which the final focus region has been designed.
