Beam Tests of the Second Prototype of a Cherenkov Counter for the ALICE T0 Detector
/ ALICE Collaboration
Abstract The second prototype of a Cherenkov counter consisting of a quartz radiator (cylinder 26 mm in diameter, 30 mm long) and a PMT Hamamatsu R3432-01 has been tested in a 1.28 GeV/c pion beam. A constant fraction discriminator EG&G; was used at the output of the PMT [...]

CASTOR detector : Model, objectives and simulated performance
/ Angelis, Aris L S ; Aslanoglou, X ; Bartke, Jerzy ; Bogolyubsky, M Yu ; Chileev, K ; Erine, S ; Gladysz-Dziadus, E ; Kharlov, Yu V ; Kurepin, A B ; Lobanov, M O et al.
We present a phenomenological model describing the formation and evolution of a Centauro fireball in the baryon-rich region in nucleus-nucleus interactions in the upper atmosphere and at the LHC. The small particle multiplicity and imbalance of electromagnetic and hadronic content characterizing a Centauro event and also the strongly penetrating particles (assumed to be strangelets) frequently accompanying them can be naturally explained. CASTOR : Centauro And STrange Object Research in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC
/ Angelis, Aris L S ; Bartke, Jerzy ; Bogolyubsky, M Yu ; Gladysz-Dziadus, E ; Kharlov, Yu V ; Kurepin, A B ; Maevskaya, A I ; Mavromanolakis, G ; Panagiotou, A D ; Sadovsky, S A et al.
We present a phenomenological model which describes the formation of a Centauro fireball in the baryon-rich projectile fragmentation region in nucleus-nucleus interactions in the upper atmosphere and at the LHC, and its decay to non-strange baryons and Strangelets. Strangelets are assimilated to the "strongly penetrating component" frequently observed accompanying hadron-rich cosmic ray events. [...]

A start trigger detector for the ALICE spectrometer
/ Grigoriev, V A ; Kaplin, V A ; Karakas, A I ; Loginov, V A ; Rakhmanov, A L ; Kurepin, A B ; Maevskaya, A I ; Razin, V I ; Reshetin, A I ; Akindinov, A et al.
A fall-back option of the T0 start trigger detector was developed for the ALICE setup that was intended for the study of quark-gluon plasma with the LHC accelerator (CERN). The Monte Carlo simulation with the PYTHIA program was performed for a detector incorporating two symmetrical arrays of 12 Cerenkov counters, each composed of 26-mm- diameter Hamamatsu R5505 phototubes with fine-mesh dynodes and a quartz radiator 3 cm in length and 26 mm in diameter. Presentation made at EPS-HEP'99 and submitted to IOP PublishingWe present a phenomenological model which describes the formation of a Centauro fireball in nucleus-nucleus interactions in the upper atmosphere and at the LHC, and its decay to non-strange baryons and strangeness-rich objects.
