White Paper on Forward Physics, BFKL, Saturation Physics and Diffraction / Hentschinski, Martin (Americas U., Puebla) ; Royon, Christophe (Kansas U.) ; Peredo, Marco Alcazar (Americas U., Puebla) ; Baldenegro, Cristian (Ecole Polytechnique) ; Bellora, Andrea (INFN, Turin) ; Boussarie, Renaud (Ecole Polytechnique, CPHT) ; Celiberto, Francesco Giovanni (ECT, Trento ; Fond. Bruno Kessler, Trento ; Fond. Bruno Kessler, Povo ; TIFPA-INFN, Trento) ; Cerci, Salim (Adiyaman U.) ; Chachamis, Grigorios (LIP, Lisbon) ; Contreras, J.G. (Prague, Tech. U.) et al.
The goal of this whitepaper is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics. We discuss the occurrences of BFKL resummation effects in special final states, such as Mueller-Navelet jets, jet gap jets, and heavy quarkonium production. [...]

Prompt ${J/\psi}$-pair production at the LHC: impact of loop-induced contributions and of the colour-octet mechanism / Lansberg, Jean-Philippe (Orsay, IPN) ; Shao, Hua-Sheng (Paris, LPTHE) ; Yamanaka, Nodoka (Orsay, IPN ; Kyoto U., Yukawa Inst., Kyoto) ; Zhang, Yu-Jie (Beihang U. ; Peking U., CHEP)
Prompt double-$J/\psi$ production at high-energy hadron colliders can be considered as a golden channel to probe double parton scatterings (DPS) --in particular to study gluon-gluon correlations inside the proton-- and, at the same time, to measure the distribution of linearly-polarised gluons inside the proton. Such studies however require a good control of both single and DPS in the respective regions where they are carried out. [...]

Perspectives for quarkonium studies at the high-luminosity LHC / Chapon, Emilien (Beijing, Inst. High Energy Phys.) ; d'Enterria, David (CERN) ; Ducloue, Bertrand (Edinburgh U. ; U. Edinburgh, Higgs Ctr. Theor. Phys.) ; Echevarria, Miguel G. (Alcala de Henares U.) ; Gossiaux, Pol-Bernard (SUBATECH, Nantes) ; Kartvelishvili, Vato (Lancaster U.) ; Kasemets, Tomas (U. We review the prospects for quarkonium-production studies in proton and nuclear collisions accessible during the upcoming phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021, including the ultimate high-luminosity phase, with increased luminosities compared to LHC Runs 1 and 2. We address the current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field and the perspectives for future studies in quarkonium-related physics through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, with integrated luminosities reaching up to 3/ab, in proton-nucleus and in nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Physics Briefing Book : Input for the European Strategy for Particle Physics Update 2020 / Ellis, Richard Keith
The European Particle Physics Strategy Update (EPPSU) process takes a bottom-up approach, whereby the community is first invited to submit proposals (also called inputs) for projects that it would like to see realised in the near-term, mid-term and longer-term future [...]

Gluon Shadowing in Heavy-Flavor Production at the LHC / Kusina, Aleksander (Cracow, INP) ; Lansberg, Jean-Philippe (Orsay, IPN) ; Schienbein, Ingo (LPSC, Grenoble) ; Shao, Hua-Sheng (UPMC, Paris (main) ; Paris, LPTHE)
We study the relevance of experimental data on heavy-flavor [$D^0$, $J/\psi$, $B\rightarrow J/\psi$ and $\Upsilon(1S)$ mesons] production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC to improve our knowledge of the gluon-momentum distribution inside heavy nuclei. We observe that the nuclear effects encoded in both most recent global fits of nuclear parton densities at next-to-leading order (nCTEQ15 and EPPS16) provide a good overall description of the LHC data. Predictions for cold nuclear matter effects on charged hadrons, identified light hadrons, quarkonium and heavy flavor hadrons, Drell-Yan dileptons, jets, photons, gauge bosons and top quarks produced in $p+$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 8.16$ TeV are compiled and, where possible, compared to each other. Predictions of the normalized ratios of $p+$Pb to $p+p$ cross sections are also presented for most of the observables, providing new insights into the expected role of cold nuclear matter effects. $J/\psi + Z$ production at the LHC / Lansberg, Jean-Philippe (Orsay, IPN) ; Shao, Hua-Sheng (CERN)
We briefly review recent results which we have obtained in the study of J/psi+Z production at the LHC. Considering our NLO computation in the Colour Evaporation Model (CEM) as an upper theory limit for the single-parton-scattering contributions, we claim that the existing data set from ATLAS points at a dominant double-parton-scattering contribution with an effective cross section smaller than that for jet-related observables. Phenomenological analysis of associated production of $Z^0+b$ in the $b \rightarrow J/\psi X$ decay channel at the LHC / Lansberg, Jean-Philippe (Orsay, IPN) ; Shao, Hua-Sheng (CERN)
The ATLAS collaboration recently reported on the first observation of associated-production of a $Z^0$ boson with a $J/\psi$. We recently claimed that the corresponding yield of the {\it prompt} $J/\psi$ was dominated by double parton scatterings in the ATLAS acceptance with a somewhat small value of $\sigma_{\rm eff}$. Di-J/psi production at the Tevatron and the LHC / Lansberg, Jean-Philippe (Orsay, IPN) ; Shao, Hua-Sheng (CERN)
We briefly review recent results which we have obtained in the study of J/psi-pair production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We claim that the existing data set from CMS and D0 point at a significant double-parton-scattering contribution with an effective cross section smaller than that for jet-related observables. [...]

Towards an automated tool to evaluate the impact of the nuclear modification of the gluon density on quarkonium, D and B meson production in proton-nucleus collisions / Lansberg, Jean-Philippe (Orsay, IPN) ; Shao, Hua-Sheng (CERN)
We propose a simple and model-independent procedure to account for the impact of the nuclear modification of the gluon density as encoded in nuclear collinear PDF sets on two-to-two partonic hard processes in proton-nucleus collisions. This applies to a good approximation to quarkonium, D and B meson production, generically referred to H. [...]
