Improvements of the SPS slow extraction electrostatic septum
/ Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Prost, Antoine (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Pirozzi, Fabrizio (CERN) ; Vincke, Helmut (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Kawa, Krzysztof (CERN ; AGH-UST, Cracow) ; Jorat, Louise Olivia (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Roudaut, Noah (CERN ; UTBM, Belfort)
The impact of high-flux protons on the inherent beam loss in the slow extraction straight from SPS towards the North Area has been recently discussed and potential improvements have been proposed. These solutions are mainly aiming to reduce the high component activation and related reduction of lifetime, as well as observed non-straightness in the anode body. [...]

Optimization of mechanical robustness in the booster injection bumpers
/ Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Atanasov, Miroslav (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Baud, Cedric (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; M Walraven (Inholland U. Appl. Sci., Alkmaar)
During the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) at CERN, the new Linac4 (L4) accelerator has been successfully connected to the PS Booster (PSB) to inject 160 MeV H− beam into the 4 superposed PSB rings. The horizontal displacement of the circulating beam during injection relies on 4 pulsed dipole magnets. [...]

Design optimization of the water-cooled coil for the LEIR extraction septum
/ Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Motschmann, Fritz (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Atanasov, Miroslav (CERN) ; Masson, Thierry (CERN) ; Erends, Vera (Utrecht U.)
A pulsed septum magnet (SMH40) is used for heavy ion extraction from the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR). A non-conformity on the coil cooling circuit made it necessary to consolidate the design of the septum blade and related manufacturing process. [...]

Achievements and Performance Prospects of the Upgraded LHC Injectors

To provide HL-LHC performance, the CERN LHC injector chain underwent a major upgrade during an almost 2-year-long shutdown. In the first half of 2021 the injectors were gradually re-started with the aim to reach at least pre-shutdown parameters for LHC as well as for fixed target beams. [...]

Feasibility Study for the Novel CERN PS Fast Extraction Septum
/ Helseth, Trygve (CERN) ; Atanasov, Miroslav G (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew A (CERN) ; Kramer, Thomas (CERN)
In the framework of accelerator consolidation, a feasibility study for a novel CERN PS extraction septum has been conducted. Functional requirements have been established and, accordingly, a system of two septa magnets and their associated pulse generator is proposed. [...]

Reduction of 400 GeV/c slow extraction beam loss with a wire diffuser at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron

Slow extraction of a quasicontinuous flux of high-energy protons is an important requirement for many high-energy physics experiments. This extraction type is associated with an unavoidable beam loss due to scattering on the thin septum element. [...]

/ Björkman, Daniel (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN) ; Vincke, Helmut (CERN)
At CERN, the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is equipped with a resonant slow extraction system in Long Straight Section 2 (LSS2) towards the fixed target (FT) beam lines in the North Area. The extraction region provides the physics experiments with a quasi-DC flux of high-energy protons over a few seconds, which corresponds to tens of thousands of turns. [...]

SPS slow extraction losses and activation: update on recent improvements

Annual high intensity requests of over $1 \times 10^{19}$ protons on target (POT) from the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) Fixed Target (FT) physics program continue, with the prospect of requests for even higher, unprecedented levels in the coming decade. A concerted and multifaceted R&D; effort has been launched to understand and reduce the slow extraction induced radioactivation of the SPS and to anticipate future experimental proposals, such as SHiP [1] at the SPS Beam Dump Facility (BDF) [2], which will request an additional $4 \times 10^{19}$ POT per year.
