/ Rodin, Volodymyr (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Demassieux, Quentin (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; Solis Paiva, Santiago (CERN) ; Seidenbinder, Regis (CERN) ; Aberle, Oliver (CERN) ; Perillo Marcone, Antonio (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) et al.
Bent crystals are a mature technology used in several applications at CERN, such as the crystal-assisted collimation system for LHC ion operation and reduction of losses during the slow extraction from the SPS by shadowing the electrostatic septum. In the future, it is planned to measure electric and magnetic dipole moments of short-lived particles with a double-crystal experiment in the LHC. [...]

In view of High Luminosity (HL) - Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project, an upgraded collimation system has been developed to accommodate a rise of ten times of the integrated luminosity compared to the LHC. A new series of collimators will be produced and installed in the machine during the Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) to take place during 2026-2028. [...]

Characterization of bent crystals for beam collimation with 6.8 TeV proton beams at the LHC
/ D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Aberle, Oliver (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Bandiera, Laura (INFN, Ferrara) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; EPFL-ISIC, Lausanne) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Demassieux, Quentin (CERN) ; Dewhurst, Kay Alana (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) et al.
The concept of crystal collimation exploits the peculiar properties of crystalline materials to deflect high-energy beam particles at angles orders of magnitude larger than what can be achieved with scattering by conventional materials used as primary collimators. This innovative technique is planned to be used to improve the collimation efficiency with heavy-ion beams at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its High-Luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). [...]

The beam stored energy and the peak intensity of CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will grow in the next few years. The former will increase from the 320 MJ values of Run2 (2015-2018) to almost 540 MJ during Run3 (2022 onwards) and 680 MJ during the HL-LHC era putting stringent requirements on beam intercepting devices, such as absorbers and dumps. Beam Intercepting Devices (BIDs) are essential protection elements for the operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) complex. The LHC internal beam dump (LHC Target Dump Injection or LHC TDI) is the main protection BID of the LHC injection system; its main function is to protect LHC equipment in the event of a malfunction of the injection kicker magnets during beam transfer from the SPS to the LHC. Crystal for slow extraction loss-reduction of the SPS electrostatic septum
/ Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Addesa, Francesca (INFN, Rome) ; Afonin, Alexander (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Bestman, Patrick (CERN) ; Borg, Johan (Imperial Coll., London) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Chesnokov, Yuri (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Denisov, Alexander (St. Petersburg, INP) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) et al.
The use of a bent crystal was investigated in order to reduce the losses at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) electrostatic septum (ZS) during the slow extraction of 400 GeV/c protons toward the North Area. The crystal, installed a few meters upstream of the ZS, bends protons that would otherwise impinge on the ZS wires. [...]

Demonstration of loss reduction using a thin bent crystal to shadow an electrostatic septum during resonant slow extraction

A proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating the feasibility of using a thin, bent crystal aligned upstream of an extraction septum (ES) to increase the efficiency of the third-integer resonant slow extraction process has been carried out at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). With the primary aim of reducing the beam loss and induced radio-activation of the SPS, the crystal was aligned to both the beam and the septum to reduce by up to 40% the beam intensity impinging the ES and increase the intensity entering the external transfer line.
