First results from the CIC data aggregation ASIC for the Phase 2 CMS Outer Tracker / CMS Tracker group Collaboration
The Concentrator Integrated Circuit (CIC) ASIC is a front-end chip for both Pixel-Strip (PS) and Strip-Strip (2S) modules of the future Phase 2 CMS Outer Tracker at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Prototyped in a 65 nm CMOS technology, the CIC aggregates the digital data coming from eight upstream front-end chips, formatting it into data packets containing the trigger information from eight bunch crossings and the raw data from events passing the Level 1 (L1) trigger, before transmission to the lpGBT. Low-power SEE hardening techniques and error rate evaluation in 65 nm readout ASICs / Caratelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Scarfi', Simone (CERN) ; Bergamin, Gianmario (CERN) ; Ceresa, Davide (CERN) ; De Clercq, Jarne Theo (Vrije U., Brussels) ; Kloukinas, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Yusuf Leblebici
Single event radiation effects represent one of the main challenges for digital designs exposed to ionizing particles in high energy physics detectors. Radiation hardening techniques are based on redundancy, leading to a significant increase in power consumption and area overhead. [...]

MPA-SSA, design and test of a 65 nm ASIC-based system for particle tracking at HL-LHC featuring on-chip particle discrimination / Ceresa, Davide (CERN) ; Bergamin, Gianmario (CERN) ; Caratelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Jan Kaplon ; Kloukinas, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Scarfi', Simone (CERN) ; Yusuf Leblebici
Particle tracking detectors for High Energy Physics need a new readout technique to cope with the increase of the collision rate foreseen for the High Luminosity LHC upgrade. In particular, the selection of interesting physics events at the first trigger stage becomes extremely challenging at high luminosity, not only because of the rate increase, but also because the selection algorithms become inefficient in high pileup conditions. The silicon strip readout ASIC (SSA) for the CMS Outer Tracker PS module was prototyped in a \(65\,nm\) CMOS technology and characterized utilizing a custom made test bench based on the FC7 \(\mu\)TCA FPGA card. The ASIC has been evaluated and characterised under different working temperatures and radiation levels up to \(200\,Mrad\). [...]

A System-Verilog Verification Environment for the CIC Data Concentrator ASIC of the CMS Outer Tracker Phase-2 Upgrades / Scarfi', Simone (CERN) ; Caratelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Caponetto, Luigi (Lyon, IPN) ; Ceresa, Davide (CERN) ; Galbit, Geoffrey Christian (Lyon, IPN) ; Kloukinas, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Yusuf Leblebici ; Nodari, Benedetta (Lyon, IPN) ; Viret, Sebastien (Lyon, IPN)
The foreseen Phase-2 upgrades at the LHC present very challenging requirements for the front-end readout electronics of the CMS Outer Tracker detector. High data rates in combination with the employment of a novel technique for rejecting locally low transverse momentum particles as well as the strict low power consumption constraints require the implementation of an optimized readout architecture and specific interconnect synchronization schemes for its components. Readout architecture for the Pixel-Strip module of the CMS Outer Tracker Phase-2 upgrade / Caratelli, Alessandro (INFN, Pisa) ; Ceresa, Davide (CERN) ; Jan Kaplon ; Kloukinas, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Simone Scarfi /CMS Collaboration
The Outer Tracker upgrade of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN introduces new challenges for the front-end readout electronics. In particular, the capability of identifying particles with high transverse momentum using modules with double sensor layers requires high speed real time interconnects between readout ASICs. [...]

A 65 nm pixel readout ASIC with quick transverse momentum discrimination capabilities for the CMS Tracker at HL-LHC / Ceresa, Davide (CERN) ; Kaplon, J (CERN) ; Francisco, R (CERN) ; Caratelli, Alessandro (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; CERN) ; Kloukinas, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Marchioro, Alessandro (CERN) /for the CMS Collaboration
A readout ASIC for the hybrid pixel detector with the capability of performing quick recognition of particles with high transverse momentum has been designed for the requirements of the CMS Outer Tracker at the High Luminosity LHC. The particle momentum dicrimination capability represents the main challenge for this design together with the low power requirement: the constraint of low mass for the new tracker dictates a total power budget of less than 100\,mW/cm$^2$. Macro Pixel ASIC (MPA): The readout ASIC for the pixel-strip (PS) module of the CMS outer tracker at HL-LHC / Ceresa, Davide (CERN) ; Marchioro, Alessandro (CERN) ; Kloukinas, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Jan Kaplon ; Bialas, Wojciech (CERN) ; Re, Valerio (INFN, Pavia) ; Traversi, Gianluca (INFN, Pavia) ; Gaioni, Luigi (INFN, Pavia) ; Ratti, Lodovico (INFN, Pavia)
The CMS tracker at HL-LHC is required to provide prompt information on particles with high transverse momentum to the central Level\,1 trigger. For this purpose, the innermost part of the outer tracker is based on a combination of a pixelated sensor with a short strip sensor, the so-called Pixel-Strip module (PS). [...]
