Fiber optic quench detection for large-scale HTS magnets demonstrated on VIPER cable during high-fidelity testing at the SULTAN facility / Salazar, Erica E (MIT, Cambridge, CTP) ; Badcock, Rodney A (Victoria U., Wellington) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Castaldo, Bernardo (CERN) ; Davies, Mike (Victoria U., Wellington) ; Estrada, Jose (MIT, Cambridge, CTP) ; Fry, Vincent (MIT, Cambridge, CTP) ; Gonzales, Jofferson T (Victoria U., Wellington) ; Michael, Philip C (MIT, Cambridge, CTP) ; Segal, Michael (Unlisted, US, MA) et al.
Fiber-optic thermometry has the potential to provide rapid and reliable quench detection for emerging large-scale, high-field superconducting magnets fabricated with high-temperature-superconductor (HTS) cables. Developing non-voltage-based quench detection schemes, such as fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology, are particularly important for applications such as magnetic fusion devices where a high degree of induced electromagnetic noise impose significant challenges on traditional voltage-based quench detection methods. VIPER: an industrially scalable high-current high-temperature superconductor cable / Hartwig, Zachary S (MIT) ; Vieira, Rui F (MIT) ; Sorbom, Brandon N (Cambridge U.) ; Badcock, Rodney A (Victoria U., Wellington) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Beck, William K (MIT) ; Castaldo, Bernardo (CERN) ; Craighill, Christopher L (MIT, Bates Linear Accelerator) ; Davies, Michael (Victoria U., Wellington) ; Estrada, Jose (MIT) et al.
High-temperature superconductors (HTS) promise to revolutionize high-power applications like wind generators, DC power cables, particle accelerators, and fusion energy devices. A practical HTS cable must not degrade under severe mechanical, electrical, and thermal conditions; have simple, low-resistance, and manufacturable electrical joints; high thermal stability; and rapid detection of thermal runaway quench events.
