HL-LHC layout for fixed-target experiments in ALICE based on crystal-assisted beam halo splitting
/ Patecki, Marcin (Warsaw U. of Tech.) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Fomin, Alex (CERN) ; Hadjidakis, Cynthia (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Galluccio, Francesca (INFN, Naples) ; Scandale, Walter (Imperial Coll., London ; INFN, Rome)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator colliding beams of protons and lead ions at energies up to 7 ZTeV, Z is the atomic number. ALICE is one of the detector experiments optimised for heavy-ion collisions. [...]

Crystal Collimation of 20 MJ Heavy-Ion Beams at the HL-LHC
/ D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Galluccio, Francesca (INFN, Naples) ; Lamas Garcia, Inigo (CERN) ; Masi, Alessandro (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Nevay, Laurence (Royal Holloway, U. of London ; CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Rossi, Roberto (CERN) et al.
The concept of crystal collimation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) relies on the use of bent crystals that can deflect halo particles by a much larger angle than the standard multi-stage collimation system. Following an extensive campaign of studies and performance validations, a number of crystal collimation tests with Pb ion beams were performed in 2018 at energies up to 6.37 Z TeV. [...]

Crystal for slow extraction loss-reduction of the SPS electrostatic septum
/ Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Addesa, Francesca (INFN, Rome) ; Afonin, Alexander (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Bestman, Patrick (CERN) ; Borg, Johan (Imperial Coll., London) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Chesnokov, Yuri (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Denisov, Alexander (St. Petersburg, INP) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) et al.
The use of a bent crystal was investigated in order to reduce the losses at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) electrostatic septum (ZS) during the slow extraction of 400 GeV/c protons toward the North Area. The crystal, installed a few meters upstream of the ZS, bends protons that would otherwise impinge on the ZS wires. [...]

Demonstration of loss reduction using a thin bent crystal to shadow an electrostatic septum during resonant slow extraction
/ Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Addesa, Francesca (INFN, Rome) ; Afonin, Alexander (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Bestmann, Patrick (CERN) ; Borg, Johan (Imperial Coll., London) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Chesnokov, Yuri (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Denisov, Alexander (St. Petersburg, INP) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) et al.
A proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating the feasibility of using a thin, bent crystal aligned upstream of an extraction septum (ES) to increase the efficiency of the third-integer resonant slow extraction process has been carried out at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). With the primary aim of reducing the beam loss and induced radio-activation of the SPS, the crystal was aligned to both the beam and the septum to reduce by up to 40% the beam intensity impinging the ES and increase the intensity entering the external transfer line. Septum shadowing by means of a bent crystal to reduce slow extraction beam loss
/ Velotti, Francesco Maria (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Pari, Michelangelo (CERN) ; Prieto, Javier (CERN) ; Rossi, Roberto (CERN) ; Scandale, Walter (CERN) et al.
The flux of high-energy protons slow-extracted from the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is limited by the induced radioactivity caused by the beam loss intrinsic to the extraction process. Methods to substantially increase the efficiency of the extraction process are of great interest to fulfill requests for an increasing flux of 400 GeV protons to the present experiments, located in the North Area of the SPS, and also for potential future experiments with very high demanded protons on target. Physics opportunities for a fixed-target programme in the ALICE experiment
/ Galluccio, Francesca (Universita e sezione INFN di Napoli (IT)) ; Hadjidakis, Cynthia (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (FR)) ; Kurepin, Alexander (Institute for Nuclear Research, Moscow) ; Massacrier, Laure (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (FR)) ; Porteboeuf, S (Centre national de la recherche scientifique (FR)) ; Pressard, Kevin (Centre national de la recherche scientifique (FR)) ; Scandale, Walter (CERN) ; Topilskaya, Natalia (Institute for Nuclear Research, Moscow) ; Trzeciak, Barbara (Utrecht University) ; Uras, Antonio (Centre national de la recherche scientifique (FR)) et al.
A fixed-target programme in the ALICE experiment using the LHC proton and lead beams offers many physics opportunities related to the parton content of the nucleon and nucleus at high-$x$, the nucleon spin and the Quark-Gluon Plasma. We investigate two solutions that would allow ALICE to run in a fixed-target mode: the internal solid target coupled to a bent crystal and the internal gas target. [...]
