Plasma accelerators present one of the most suitable candidates for the development of more compact particle acceleration technologies, yet they still lag behind radiofrequency (RF)-based devices when it comes to beam quality, control, stability and power efficiency. The Horizon 2020-funded project EuPRAXIA (“European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications”) aims to overcome the first three of these hurdles by developing a conceptual design for a first international user facility based on plasma acceleration. Zemax ray tracing model for plasma waveguides / Bisesto, F (Frascati) ; Galletti, M (Lisbon, IST ; Rutherford) ; Curcio, A (CERN)
Plasma-based waveguides are currently employed for laser wakefield acceleration to extend the focal region of laser beams. A parabolic transverse plasma density profile, suitable for laser guiding, can be established in a dielectric capillary as a consequence of a discharge in gas. [...]

Modeling and diagnostics for plasma discharge capillaries / Curcio, A (CERN) ; Bisesto, F (Frascati) ; Costa, G (Frascati) ; Biagioni, A (Frascati) ; Anania, M P (Frascati) ; Pompili, R (Frascati) ; Ferrario, M (Frascati) ; Petrarca, M (INFN, Rome ; U. Rome La Sapienza (main))
In this paper, we show how plasma discharge capillaries can be numerically modeled as resistors within an RLC-series discharge circuit, allowing for a simple description of these systems, while taking into account heat and radiation losses. An analytic radial model is also provided and compared to the numerical model for plasma discharge capillaries at thermal equilibrium, with corrections due to radiation losses. [...]

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications) is producing a conceptual design report for a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams accelerated using plasmas. EuPRAXIA will be set up as a distributed Open Innovation platform with two construction sites, one with a focus on beam-driven plasma acceleration (PWFA) and another site with a focus on laser-driven plasma acceleration (LWFA). On the wake of the results obtained so far at the SPARC\_LAB test-facility at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (Italy), we are currently investigating the possibility to design and build a new multi-disciplinary user-facility, equipped with a soft X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) driven by a $\sim$1 GeV high brightness linac based on plasma accelerator modules. This design study is performed in synergy with the EuPRAXIA design study. [...]
