(CERN) et al.
Flexible graphite (FG) with 1 - 1.2 g/cm$^3$ density is employed as beam energy absorber material in the CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam dumping system. However, the increase of energy deposited expected for new HL-LHC (High-Luminosity LHC) design demanded for an improvement in reliability and safety of beam dumping devices, and the need for a calibrated material model suitable for high-level FE simulations has been prioritized. Towards the Last Stages of the CERN’s AD-Target Area Consolidation Project and Recommissioning Plans to Resume Operation / Torregrosa, Claudio (CERN) ; Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Bouvard, Aymeric (CERN) ; Broche, Alexandre (CERN) ; Burger, Stephane (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Clerc, Vincent (CERN) ; De Macedo, Aurelio (CERN) ; De Man, Sven (CERN) et al.
Antiprotons are produced at CERN at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) Target Area by impacting 26 GeV/c proton beams onto a fixed target. Further collection, momentum selection, and transport of the secondary particles - including antiprotons - towards the AD ring is realised by a 400 kA pulsed magnetic horn and a set of magnetic dipoles and quadrupoles. First observation of spalling in tantalum at high temperatures induced by high energy proton beam impacts / Torregrosa Martin, Claudio (CERN) ; Solieri, Nicola (CERN) ; Fornasiere, Elvis (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Busom Descarrega, Josep (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Canhoto Espadanal, Joao (CERN) ; Perillo-Marcone, Antonio (CERN) ; Spätig, Philippe (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; PSI, Villigen)
Spalling in tantalum has been observed in an experiment aiming at testing an antiproton production target prototype at CERN’s HiRadMat Facility. The experiment consisted in impacting 47 intense and high-energy proton beams onto a target equipped with ten cylindrical cores made of tantalum of Ø8 mm by 16 mm. [...]

Design and operation of the air-cooled beam dump for the extraction line of CERN's Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) / Perillo-Marcone, Antonio (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Solieri, Nicola (CERN) ; Ciccotelli, Alessia (CERN) ; Kaiser, Paul (CERN) ; Sarrio, Alba (CERN) ; Venturi, Valentina (CERN) ; Vlachoudis, Vasilis (CERN)
A new beam dump has been designed, built, installed and operated to withstand the future proton beam extracted from the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) in the framework of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) Project at CERN, consisting of up to 1E14 protons per pulse at 2 GeV, foreseen after the machine upgrades planned for CERN's Long Shutdown 2 (2019-2020). In order to be able to efficiently dissipate the heat deposited by the primary beam, the new dump was designed as a cylindrical block assembly, made out of a copper alloy and cooled by forced airflow. SPS slow extraction losses and activation: update on recent improvements / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Barna, Daniel (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bernhard, Johannes (CERN) ; Bertone, Caterina (CERN) ; Björkman, Daniel (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Brunner, Kristóf (Wigner RCP, Budapest) et al.
Annual high intensity requests of over $1 \times 10^{19}$ protons on target (POT) from the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) Fixed Target (FT) physics program continue, with the prospect of requests for even higher, unprecedented levels in the coming decade. A concerted and multifaceted R&D; effort has been launched to understand and reduce the slow extraction induced radioactivation of the SPS and to anticipate future experimental proposals, such as SHiP [1] at the SPS Beam Dump Facility (BDF) [2], which will request an additional $4 \times 10^{19}$ POT per year. First prototypes of the new design of the CERN's antiproton production target / Torregrosa Martin, Claudio Leopoldo (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Solieri, Nicola (CERN) ; Espadanal, Joao Canhoto (CERN) ; Perillo‐Marcone, Antonio (CERN) ; Ferriere, Romain (CERN) ; Fornasiere, Elvis (CERN) ; Descarrega, Josep Busom (U. Exeter) ; Dickinson, Benjamin (U. Exeter)
For antiproton production at CERN, high‐energy (26 GeV/c), intense, and short proton beams are impacted into a small rod-target core-made of a dense metal. Temperature rises in the order of 2000°C, and subsequent dynamic stresses of several gigapascals are induced in this rod every time it is impacted by the primary proton beam. [...]

Antiprotons are produced at CERN by impacting intense proton beams of 26 GeV/c onto a high-Z water-cooled target. The current design consists in an Ir core target in a graphite matrix and inserted in a Ti-6Al-4V assembly. [...]

Scaled prototype of a tantalum target embedded in expanded graphite for antiproton production: Design, manufacturing, and testing under proton beam impacts / Torregrosa Martin, Claudio (CERN ; Valencia, Polytechnic U.) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Perillo-Marcone, Antonio (CERN) ; Ferriere, Romain (CERN) ; Solieri, Nicola (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Grec, Lucian-Mircea (CERN) ; Canhoto Espadanal, Joao (CERN) /RaDIATE Collaboration
This study presents a further step within the ongoing R&D activities for the redesign of the CERN's Antiproton Decelerator Production Target (AD-Target). A first scaled target prototype, constituted of a sliced core made of ten Ta rods -8 mm diameter, 16 mm length- embedded in a compressed expanded graphite (EG) matrix, inserted in a 44 mm diameter Ti-6Al-4V container, has been built and tested under proton beam impacts at the CERN's HiRadMat facility, in the so called HRMT-42 experiment.
