Waveguide-Integrated Germanium-on-Silicon (Ge-on-Si) photodiodes are integral components in silicon photonics and understanding their radiation tolerance is important for applications that intend to use silicon photonics in harsh radiation environments. Here we report the results of high fluence particle irradiation tests on Ge-on-Si photodiodes. [...]

System Development of Radiation-Tolerant Silicon Photonics Transceivers for High Energy Physics Applications / Prousalidi, Theoni (CERN ; Natl. Tech. U., Athens) ; Scarcella, Carmelo (CERN) ; Ahmed, Aalia (CERN ; York U., England, Dept. Math.) ; Detraz, Stéphane (CERN) ; Lalović, Milana (Belgrade U.) ; Olanterä, Lauri (CERN) ; Pandey, Awanish (CERN) ; Sigaud, Christophe (CERN) ; Soós, Csaba (CERN) ; Troska, Jan (CERN) et al.
Silicon photonics enables the manufacturing of high-speed, low-power, integrated optical circuits with compact footprints, and recent studies have also shown it to have a high tolerance to radiation. The technology has, therefore, been identified as an excellent candidate for the development of the next generation of radiation-tolerant optical links for high-energy physics (HEP) experiments at CERN. The HEV Ventilator: at the interface between particle physics and biomedical engineering / Buytaert, Jan (CERN) ; Collins, Paula (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Abud, Adam Abed (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Allport, Phil (Birmingham U.) ; Álvarez, Antonio Pazos (Santiago de Compostela U., IGFAE) ; Akiba, Kazuyoshi (Nikhef, Amsterdam) ; de Aguiar Francisco, Oscar Augusto (CERN ; Manchester U.) ; Bay, Aurelio (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bernard, Florian (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Baron, Sophie (CERN) et al.
A high-quality, low-cost ventilator, dubbed HEV, has been developed by the particle physics community working together with biomedical engineers and physicians around the world. The HEV design is suitable for use both in and out of hospital intensive care units, provides a variety of modes and is capable of supporting spontaneous breathing and supplying oxygen-enriched air. Ionizing Radiation Effects in Silicon Photonics Modulators / Lalovic, Milana (CERN ; Belgrade U.) ; Scarcella, Carmelo (CERN) ; Bulling, Anthony (CERN) ; Detraz, Stephane (CERN) ; Marcon, Leonardo (CERN) ; Olantera, Lauri (CERN) ; Prousalidi, Theoni (CERN ; Natl. Silicon photonics (SiPh) shows considerable potential as a radiation-hard technology for building the optical data transmission links for future high-energy physics (HEP) experiments at CERN. Optical modulators are a key component of optical links, which will need to withstand radiation doses in excess of 10 MGy. [...]

Radiation Effects on High-Speed InGaAs Photodiodes / Olantera, Lauri (CERN) ; Bottom, Freya (CERN) ; Kraxner, Andrea (CERN) ; Detraz, Stephane (CERN) ; Menouni, Mohsine (Marseille, CPPM) ; Moreira, Paulo (CERN) ; Scarcella, Carmelo (CERN) ; Sigaud, Christophe (CERN) ; Soos, Csaba (CERN) ; Troska, Jan (CERN) et al.
Photodiodes are important components in optical data links, and their performance degradation under irradiation has to be understood in order to guarantee the long-term functionality of the data links in radiation environments of high-energy physics experiments. Indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) on indium phosphide (InP) photodiodes are attractive candidates for these applications, thanks to their relatively modest radiation-induced responsivity loss when operated at 850 nm.
