Beam performance and operational efficiency at the CERN Proton Synchrotron
/ Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Coly, Marcel (CERN) ; Cotte, Denis (CERN) ; Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Delrieux, Marc (CERN) ; Dumont, Jean-Charles (CERN) ; Dutheil, Yann (CERN) ; Easton, Sandy (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Guerrero, Ana (CERN) et al.
The injectors for the LHC at CERN underwent a major upgrade during a recent two-year long shutdown in the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project. Following this upgrade, the Proton Synchrotron (PS) was restarted in 2021, with the same beam quality as before the upgrade quickly achieved or surpassed. [...]

Impact of high-intensity LHC beam operation on warm vacuum modules
/ Antuono, C (CERN) ; Krkotić, P (CERN) ; de la Fuente Garcia, E (CERN) ; Zannini, C (CERN) ; Calatroni, S (CERN) ; Baglin, V (CERN) ; Bregliozzi, G (CERN) ; Chiggiato, P (CERN) ; Galloro, A (CERN) ; Giacomel, L (CERN) et al.
During the third run of the Large Hadron Collider in 2023, which had the highest intensity bunch population compared to previous runs, a beam dump incident with operational delays occurred due to increased losses attributed to pressure spikes within a warm vacuum sector. Subsequent inspections revealed localized annealing and plasticization of the tension spring in the sliding contact radio frequency finger of a 212 mm diameter vacuum module, alongside traces of vapor deposition on the various module components with the stainless steel spring material. Overview of beam intensity issues and mitigations in the CERN-SPS fast wire scanners
/ Veness, Raymond (CERN) ; Guerrero, Ana (CERN) ; Perez Fontenla, Ana Teresa (CERN) ; Harrison, Anthony (CERN) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN) ; Antuono, Chiara (CERN) ; Vollinger, Christine (CERN) ; de la Fuente, Elena (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) et al.
A new design of fast wire scanner was installed in the CERN injector complex as part of the upgrades linked to the High-Luminosity LHC Project. Initial operations with these beams were good, but during the planned intensity ramp-up one early 2023, all four SPS scanners failed at the same time. [...]

Impedance and thermal studies of the CERN SPS wire scanners and mitigation of wire heating

All wires of the four CERN SPS rotational wirescanners broke when increasing the beam intensity towards the target for the LHC Injector Upgrade in 2023. Impedance and thermal studies were immediately launched, with simulations and measurements indicating that beam induced heating from resonant modes on the thin wire could be sufficient to cause these breakages. Operation of the LHC during the 2023 proton run
/ Calia, Andrea (CERN) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Nisbet, David (CERN) ; Jacquet, Delphine (CERN) ; Métral, Elias (CERN) ; Bravin, Enrico (CERN) ; Trad, Georges (CERN) ; Wenninger, Jorg (CERN) ; Solfaroli, Matteo (CERN) et al.
In 2023 the LHC restarted after the yearly winter shutdown with a new machine configuration optimized for intensities of up to 1.8e+11 protons per bunch. In the first two months of the 2023 run the bunch intensities were pushed up to 1.6e+11 protons per bunch until a severe vacuum degradation, caused by a damaged RF bridge, occurred close to the ATLAS experiment. High-density gas target at the LHCb experiment
/ Boente Garcia, O. (LLR, Palaiseau) ; Bregliozzi, G. (CERN) ; Calegari, D. (CERN) ; Carassiti, V. (INFN, Ferrara) ; Ciullo, G. (INFN, Ferrara ; Ferrara U.) ; Coco, V. (CERN) ; Collins, P. The recently installed internal gas target at LHCb presents exceptional opportunities for an extensive physics program for heavy-ion, hadron, spin, and astroparticle physics. A storage cell placed in the LHC primary vacuum, an advanced Gas Feed System, the availability of multi-TeV proton and ion beams and the recent upgrade of the LHCb detector make this project unique worldwide.
