The electron cloud and its impact on LHC and future colliders / Mether, Lotta (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Paraschou, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Sabato, Luca (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Johannesson, Sofia (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
The secondary emission of electrons and their interaction with the electromagnetic fields of charged particle beams can lead to the build-up of electron clouds in accelerator beam chambers. The interaction of the electrons with both the beam and the chamber walls leads to detrimental effects, such as transverse instabilities and emittance growth, beam loss, pressure rise and heat load. Selected advances in the accelerator design of the Future Circular Electron-Positron Collider (FCC-ee) / FCC Collaboration
In autumn 2023, the FCC Feasibility Study underwent a crucial “mid-term review”. We describe some accelerator performance risks for the proposed future circular electron-positron collider, FCC-ee, identified for, and during, the mid-term review. [...]

Electron Cloud Effects in the CERN Accelerators in Run 3 / Mether, Lotta (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Giacomel, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Johannesson, Sofia (CERN) ; Mases Solé, Ingrid (CERN) ; Paraschou, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Sabato, Luca (CERN) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN) et al.
Several of the machines in the CERN accelerator complex, in particular the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), are prone to the build-up of electron clouds. Electron cloud effects are observed especially when the machines are operated with a 25 ns bunch spacing, which has routinely been used in the LHC since the start of its second operational run in 2015. Progress in Mastering Electron Clouds at the Large Hadron Collider / Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Bradu, Benjamin (CERN) ; Mether, Lotta (CERN) ; Paraschou, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Petit, Valentine (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Sabato, Luca (CERN) ; Skripka, Galina (CERN) ; Taborelli, Mauro (CERN) ; Tavian, Laurent (CERN)
During the second operational run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) a bunch spacing of 25 ns was used for the first time for luminosity production. With such a spacing, electron cloud effects are much more severe than with the 50-ns spacing, which had been used in the previous run. [...]

A Measurement Method Based on RF Deflector for Particle Bunch Longitudinal Parameters in Linear Accelerators / Sabato, Luca (CERN) ; Arpaia, Pasquale (CERN ; Naples U.) ; Gilardi, Antonio (CERN ; Naples U.) ; Mostacci, Andrea (Rome U.) ; Palumbo, Luigi (Rome U.) ; Variola, Alessandro (Frascati)
In high-brightness electron linear accelerators (LINACs), the particle bunch length is measured by a radio frequency deflector (RFD). The electron bunch is deflected vertically toward a screen and its length can be obtained using vertical spot size measurements after a proper calibration, e.g., measuring the vertical bunch centroid while varying the deflecting voltage phase. Linearized method for the study of transverse instabilities driven by electron clouds / Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Mether, Lotta (CERN) ; Mounet, Nicolas (CERN) ; Sabato, Luca (CERN)
We present a linearized method to study transverse instabilities due to electron clouds. It is based on an accurate and compact characterization of the cloud dipolar and quadrupolar forces, that can be easily obtained from quick single-pass numerical simulations. [...]

Enhancing particle bunch-length measurements based on Radio Frequency Deflector by the use of focusing elements / Arpaia, Pasquale (U. Naples (main)) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Gilardi, Antonio (U. Naples (main) ; CERN) ; Mostacci, Andrea (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Sabato, Luca (CERN) ; Sjobak, Kyrre N (CERN ; U. Oslo (main))
A method to monitor the length of a particle bunch, based on the combination of a Radio Frequency Deflector (RFD) with magnetic focusing elements, is presented. With respect to state-of-the-art bunch length measurement, the additional focusing element allows to measure also the correlations between the longitudinal and transverse planes in terms of both position and divergence.
