Electron cloud formation in CERN particle accelerators and its impact on the beam dynamics / Romano, Annalisa
In high energy accelerators operating with positively charged particles, photoemission and secondary emission can give rise to an exponential electron multiplication within the beam chamber, which leads to the formation of a so-called Electron Cloud (EC) [...]

Electron cloud buildup driving spontaneous vertical instabilities of stored beams in the Large Hadron Collider / Romano, Annalisa (CERN ; Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Boine-Frankenheim, Oliver (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Buffat, Xavier (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN)
At the beginning of the 2016 run, an anomalous beam instability was systematically observed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Its main characteristic was that it spontaneously appeared after beams had been stored for several hours in collision at 6.5 TeV to provide data for the experiments, despite large chromaticity values and high strength of the Landau-damping octupole magnet. [...]

Electron Cloud Effects at the LHC and LHC Injectors / Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Belli, Eleonora (Rome U. ; CERN) ; Dijkstal, Philipp (CERN ; Darmstadt, Tech. Electron cloud effects are one of the main limitations of the performance of the LHC and its injectors. Enormous progress has been done in the simulation of the electron cloud build-up and of the effects on beam stability while mitigation measures have been identified and implemented (scrubbing, low secondary electron yield coatings, etc.). Macroparticle Simulation Studies of the LHC Beam Dynamics in the Presence of Electron Cloud / Romano, Annalisa (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Li, Kevin (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN)
Beam quality degradation caused by the Electron Cloud (EC) effects has been identified as one of the main performance limitations for the high intensity 25 ns beams in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). When a proton bunch passes through an EC, electrons are attracted towards the transverse center of the beam resulting into an increasing electron density within the bunch. [...]

Upgrading the SPS Fast Extraction Kicker Systems for HL-LHC / Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Beck, Mario (CERN) ; Day, Hugo (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Garcia-Tabares Valdivieso, Elisa (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Neupert, Holger (CERN) ; Romano, Annalisa (CERN) ; Vega Cid, Lorena (CERN) ; Weterings, Wim (CERN) et al.
The CERN SPS has two fast extraction systems, each consisting of travelling wave kicker magnets (MKEs). The beam induced heating in the ferrite yoke of these magnets was historically kept to an acceptable level by implementing water cooling of the kicker magnets: in addition serigraphy was applied on the surfaces of the ferrite yoke facing the beam. Evolution of Python Tools for the Simulation of Electron Cloud Effects / Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Belli, Eleonora (CERN) ; Li, Kevin (CERN) ; Mether, Lotta (CERN) ; Romano, Annalisa (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN)
PyECLOUD was originally developed as a tool for the simulation of electron cloud build-up in particle accelerators. Over the last five years the code has become part of a wider set of modular and scriptable python tools that can be combined to study different effects of the e-cloud in increasingly complex scenarios.
