Robust Independent Validation of Experiment and Theory: Rivet version 3 / Bierlich, Christian (DARK Cosmology Ctr. ; Lund U.) ; Buckley, Andy (Glasgow U.) ; Butterworth, Jonathan (University Coll. London) ; Christensen, Christian Holm (Bohr Inst.) ; Corpe, Louie (Imperial Coll., London) ; Grellscheid, David (Bergen U.) ; Grosse-Oetringhaus, Jan Fiete (CERN) ; Gutschow, Christian (University Coll. First released in 2010, the Rivet library forms an important repository for analysis code, facilitating comparisons between measurements of the final state in particle collisions and theoretical calculations of those final states. We give an overview of Rivet's current design and implementation, its uptake for analysis preservation and physics results, and summarise recent developments including propagation of MC systematic-uncertainty weights, heavy-ion and $ep$ physics, and systems for detector emulation. A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig (version 7.2) is now available. This version introduces a number of improvements, notably: improvements to the simulation of multiple-parton interactions, including diffractive processes; a new model for baryonic colour re-connection; spin correlations in both the dipole and angular-ordered parton showers; improvements to strangeness production; an improved choice of evolution variable in the angular-ordered parton shower; support for generic Lorentz structures in BSM models..

NLO efforts in Herwig++ / Reuschle, Christian (Florida State U. ; Karlsruhe U., ITP) ; Bellm, Johannes (Durham U. ; Durham U., IPPP ; Karlsruhe U., ITP) ; Gieseke, Stefan (Karlsruhe U., ITP) ; Grellscheid, David (Durham U., IPPP ; Durham U.) ; Plätzer, Simon (Durham U. ; Durham U., IPPP ; Manchester U.) ; Rauch, Michael (Karlsruhe U., ITP) ; Richardson, Peter (Durham U. ; Durham U., IPPP ; CERN) ; Schichtel, Peter (Durham U. ; Durham U., IPPP) ; Seymour, Michael H. With the advent and recent extension of the BLHA standard to interface Monte Carlo event generators and one-loop matrix element providers, the Herwig++ event generator has expanded its range of applicability to a multitude of underlying hard processes at NLO QCD. The new NLO development is centered around the Matchbox framework, which turns fixed NLO QCD calculations into parton shower matched calculations - to be matched to the two parton shower variants of Herwig++. A major new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 3.0) is now available. This release marks the end of distinguishing Herwig++ and HERWIG development and therefore constitutes the first major release of version 7 of the Herwig event generator family. [...]

We review the physics basis, main features and use of general-purpose Monte Carlo event generators for the simulation of proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Topics included are: the generation of hard-scattering matrix elements for processes of interest, at both leading and next-to-leading QCD perturbative order; their matching to approximate treatments of higher orders based on the showering approximation; the parton and dipole shower formulations; parton distribution functions for event generators; non-perturbative aspects such as soft QCD collisions, the underlying event and diffractive processes; the string and cluster models for hadron formation; the treatment of hadron and tau decays; the inclusion of QED radiation and beyond-Standard-Model processes.
