A Snapshot of CERN Beam Instrumentation R&D; Activities

The CERN accelerator complex stands out as an unique scientific tool, distinguished by its scale and remarkable diversity. Its capacity to explore a vast range of beam parameters is truly unparalleled, spanning from the minute energies of around a few keV and microampere antiproton beams, decelerated within the CERN antimatter factory, to the 6.8 TeV high-intensity proton beams that race through the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Calibration of the LHC Diamond beam loss monitors for LHC Run 3
/ Morales Vigo, Sara (CERN ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Salvachua, Belen (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Zamantzas, Christos (CERN) ; Calvo Giraldo, Eva (CERN) ; Martinez Samblas, Javier (CERN) ; Wolfenden, Joseph (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Gonzalez-Berges, Manuel (CERN)
A set of twelve Polycrystalline Chemical Vapour Deposition (pCVD) diamond detectors are installed in the beam injection, extraction and betatron collimation areas of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as fast beam loss monitoring detectors. Their high-radiation tolerance and time resolution in the order of a few ns makes them an ideal candidate to monitor bunch-by-bunch losses in the LHC beams, which have a nominal bunch separation of 25 ns. Fast Spill Monitor Studies for the SPS Fixed Target Beams
/ Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Belohrad, David (CERN) ; Bergamaschi, Michele (CERN) ; Calvo Giraldo, Eva (CERN) ; Effinger, Ewald (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Martin Nieto, Miguel (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) et al.
At the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) the proton beam is supplied to the fixed target experiments in the North Area facility (NA) via a slow extraction process, taking place at 400 GeV. The monitoring of the spill quality during the extraction, lasting 4.8 seconds with the present SPS setup, is of high interest for minimising beam losses and providing the users with uniform proton-on-target rates. The Diamond Beam Loss Monitoring System at CERN LHC and SPS
/ Calvo Giraldo, Eva (CERN) ; Effinger, Ewald (CERN) ; Gonzalez Berges, Manuel (CERN) ; Kral, Jiri (Prague, Tech. U.) ; Martínez Samblas, Javier (CERN) ; Morales Vigo, Sara (CERN) ; Salvachúa, Belen (CERN) ; Zamantzas, Christos (CERN)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerators are equipped with 17 pCVD diamond based Beam Loss detectors at strategical locations where their nanosecond resolution can provide insights into the loss mechanisms and complement the information of the standard ionization chamber type detectors. They are used at the injection and extraction lines of the LHC and SPS, to analyse the injection or extraction efficiency, and to verify the timing alignment of other elements like kicker magnets. The Beam Loss Monitoring System after LHC Long Shutdown 2 at CERN
/ Saccani, Mathieu (CERN) ; Effinger, Ewald (CERN) ; Viganò, William (CERN) ; Zamantzas, Christos (CERN)
Most of the LHC systems at CERN were updated during the Long Shutdown 2, from December 2018 to July 2022, to prepare the accelerator for High-Luminosity. The Beam Loss Monitoring system is a key part of the LHC’s instrumentation for machine protection and beam optimisation by producing continuous and reliable measurements of beam losses along the accelerator. Findings of the Physics Beyond Colliders ECN3 Beam Delivery Task Force
/ Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bernhard, Johannes (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Colinet, Antoine (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Franqueira Ximenes, Rui (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Gautheron, Fabrice (University of Patras (GR)) et al.
The ECN3 Beam Delivery Task Force was mandated by the PBC Study Group to assess the technical feasibility of increasing the proton beam intensity to the ECN3 hall of the North Area to satisfy the demands of a compelling set of PBC experimental physics proposals. This report summarises the findings of the Task Force that converge on a technically feasible solution with an implementation timeline that could exploit and build upon the investment already foreseen as part of Phase 1 of the NA-CONS project, and take the SPS complex into a new intensity frontier for Fixed Target physics in Run4..

Linearity and Response Time of the LHC Diamond Beam Loss Monitors in the CLEAR Beam Test Facility at CERN

Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) diamond detectors have been tested during the Run 2 operation period (2015-2018) as fast beam loss monitors for the Beam Loss Monitoring (BLM) system of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. However, the lack of raw data recorded during this operation period restrains our ability to perform a deep analysis of their signals. [...]
