A Description Driven Approach for Flexible Metadata Tracking / Branson, Andrew (West England U.) ; Shamdasani, Jetendr (West England U.) ; McClatchey, Richard (West England U.)
Evolving user requirements presents a considerable software engineering challenge, all the more so in an environment where data will be stored for a very long time, and must remain usable as the system specification evolves around it. [...]

Designing Reusable Systems that Can Handle Change : Description-Driven Systems : Revisiting Object-Oriented Principles / McClatchey, Richard (West England U.) ; Branson, Andrew (West England U.) ; Shamdasani, Jetendr (West England U.)
In the age of the Cloud and so-called Big Data systems must be increasingly flexible, reconfigurable and adaptable to change in addition to being developed rapidly. [...]

CRISTAL : A Practical Study in Designing Systems to Cope with Change / Branson, Andrew (West England U.) ; McClatchey, Richard (West England U.) ; Le Goff, Jean-Marie (CERN) ; Shamdasani, Jetendr (West England U.)
Software engineers frequently face the challenge of developing systems whose requirements are likely to change in order to adapt to organizational reconfigurations or other external pressures. Evolving requirements present difficulties, especially in environments in which business agility demands shorter development times and responsive prototyping. [...]

Designing Traceability into Big Data Systems / McClatchey, Richard (West England U.) ; Branson, Andrew (West England U.) ; Shamdasani, Jetendr (West England U.) ; Kovacs, Zsolt (West England U.)
Providing an appropriate level of accessibility and traceability to data or process elements (so-called Items) in large volumes of data, often Cloud-resident, is an essential requirement in the Big Data era. [...]

Towards Provenance and Traceability in CRISTAL for HEP / Shamdasani, Jetendr (West England U.) ; Branson, Andrew (West England U.) ; McClatchey, Richard (West England U.)
This paper discusses the CRISTAL object lifecycle management system and its use in provenance data management and the traceability of system events. This software was initially used to capture the construction and calibration of the CMS ECAL detector at CERN for later use by physicists in their data analysis. [...]

A New Boson with a Mass of 125 GeV Observed with the CMS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider / CMS Collaboration
The Higgs boson was postulated nearly five decades ago within the framework of the standard model of particle physics and has been the subject of numerous searches at accelerators around the world. Its discovery would verify the existence of a complex scalar field thought to give mass to three of the carriers of the electroweak force—the W+, W–, and Z0 bosons—as well as to the fundamental quarks and leptons. [...]

Observation of a new boson at a mass of 125 GeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC / CMS Collaboration
Results are presented from searches for the standard model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7 and 8 TeV in the CMS experiment at the LHC, using data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 5.1 inverse femtobarns at 7 TeV and 5.3 inverse femtobarns at 8 TeV. The search is performed in five decay modes: $\gamma\gamma$, ZZ, WW, $\tau^+ \tau^-$, and $b\bar{b}$. [...]

A Fault Tolerant, Dynamic and Low Latency BDII Architecture for Grids / Osman, Asif (PIEAS, Islamabad) ; Anjum, Ashiq (West England U.) ; Batool, Naheed (PIEAS, Islamabad) ; McClatchey, Richard (West England U.)
The current BDII model relies on information gathering from agents that run on each core node of a Grid. This information is then published into a Grid wide information resource known as Top BDII. [...]

CMS Workflow Execution using Intelligent Job Scheduling and Data Access Strategies / Hasham, Khawar (West England U. ; CERN) ; Delgado Peris, Antonio (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Anjum, Ashiq (West England U.) ; Evans, Dave (Fermilab) ; Hufnagel, Dirk (CERN) ; Huedo, Eduardo (Madrid U.) ; Hernandez, Jose M. (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; McClatchey, Richard (West England U.) ; Gowdy, Stephen (CERN) ; Metson, Simon (Bristol U.) /CMS Collaboration
Complex scientific workflows can process large amounts of data using thousands of tasks. The turnaround times of these workflows are often affected by various latencies such as the resource discovery, scheduling and data access latencies for the individual workflow processes or actors. [...]
