Development of a Field Emission Electron Gun for Low Energy Electron Cooling / Tranquille, Gerard (CERN) ; Cenede, Jean (CERN) ; Galante, Bruno (CERN ; PSI, Villigen) ; Welker, Elisabeth-Sena (CERN ; Vienna, Tech. U.)
The use of carbon nanotubes (CNT) as a cold electron source for a low energy electron cooler has been studied in detail. To fully characterise different CNT arrays (conditioning process, emitted current, lifetime) and to investigate the optimum electrical configuration of the source to be used in an electron gun, a cold cathode test bench (CCTB) has been set up. Application of Nanostructures and Metamaterials in Accelerator Physics / Resta-López, Javier (GACE-ICMUV) ; Apsimon, Oznur (Liverpool U.) ; Bonatto, Alexandre (Rio Grande do Sul U.) ; Bonțoiu, Cristian (Liverpool U.) ; Galante, Bruno (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Carbon-based nanostructures and metamaterials offer extraordinary mechanical and opto-electrical properties, which make them suitable for applications in diverse fields, including, for example, bioscience, energy technology and quantum computing. In the latest years, important R&D; efforts have been made to investigate the potential use of graphene and carbon-nanotube (CNT) based structures to manipulate and accelerate particle beams. [...]

Stability and Lifetime Studies of Carbon Nanotubes for Electron Cooling in ELENA / Galante, Bruno (CERN ; Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Resta-López, Javier (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U. ; Valencia U.) ; Tranquille, Gerard (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
Electron cooling is a fundamental process to guarantee beam quality in low energy antimatter facilities. In ELENA, the electron cooler reduces the emittance blow-up of the antiproton beam so that a focused and bright beam can be delivered to the experiments at the unprecedentedly low energy of 100 keV. [...]

Carbon Nanotubes as Cold Electron Field Emitters for Electron Cooling in the CERN Extra Low Energy Antiproton (ELENA) Ring / Galante, Bruno (CERN ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U.) ; Apsimon, Oznur (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Resta-López, Javier (GACE-ICMUV) ; Tranquille, Gerard A (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten P (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
In ELENA electron cooling reduces the emittance of the antiproton beam allowing to deliver a high-quality beam to the experiments at the unprecedented low energy of 100 keV. To cool the antiproton beam at this low energy, the electron gun must emit electrons with as monoenergetic a distribution as possible. [...]

Stability and lifetime study of carbon nanotubes as cold electron field emitters for electron cooling in the CERN extra low energy antiproton ring / Galante, Bruno (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; U. Liverpool (main) ; CERN) ; Tranquille, Gerard Alain (CERN) ; Himmerlich, Marcel (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten Peter (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Resta López, Javier (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; U. Liverpool (main) ; GACE-ICMUV)
Electron cooling is a fundamental process to guarantee the beam quality in low energy antimatter facilities. In extra low energy antiproton, the electron cooler reduces the emittance blowup of the antiproton beam and thus delivers a focused and bright beam to the experiments at the unprecedentedly low kinetic energy of 100 keV.
