OCM State of the Art / Lo Presti, Giuseppe (speaker) (CERN)
This presentation will set the scene for the Campfire session. The current state of the specification and its latest evolution will be presented, with reference to the ScienceMesh infrastructure and the CS3 community at large. A number of questions will be raised, which can be discussed in the Panel discussion that will follow the topical lightning talks..

Triad’s consonance and dissonance: combining roughness and compactness models / Masina, Isabella (Ferrara U. ; INFN, Ferrara) ; Lo Presti, Giuseppe (CERN)
Theories of consonance and dissonance based on the “roughness” approach are those that explain these perceptions as due to the primary beatings between harmonics. Originally proposed by Helmholtz, this approach has been very popular in the last century, being naturally associated to continuous functions of the frequency ratios, on the contrary of theories based on the “compactness” approach. The Physics of Music from Pythagoras to Microtones / Masina, Isabella (speaker) (Universita e INFN, Ferrara (IT)) ; Lo Presti, Giuseppe (speaker) (CERN)
Abstract:What are the physical foundations of Western music? Why are there 12 notes in an octave? Why is Equal Temperament so successful? What is the role of microtones in music composition? In this lecture series we will try to answer these and many other questions, that might have come to the mind of scientists playing an instrument from amateur to semi-professional level. In the first lecture, starting from the case study of the vibrating string, we first review harmonic sounds and timbre in the context of Signal Theory. We then introduce the psychoacoustic notions of "roughness", Critical Bandwidth and Discrimination Limen. [...]

Applications integration beyond local clouds with OCM / Lo Presti, Giuseppe (speaker) (CERN)
The Open Cloud Mesh (OCM) protocol has been adopted as part of the ScienceMesh infrastructure to enable interactive and agile collaboration across various file synchronization and sharing providers at a pan-European level. With such infrastructure emerging as the collaboration space across institutions, an important added value is the ability to open document files and work with other collaborators, by exploiting concurrent editing capabilities of common online editors such as Collabora and CodiMD. In this presentation, we demonstrate the work done towards integrating applications on top of OCM-shared files, both in terms of OCM extensions and web UI, and how this enables organizations that are part of ScienceMesh to share their application engines. We discuss licensing issues related to such cross-sites use cases, and we conclude with future prospects in the landscape of collaborative apps for cloud storage systems..

Dyad’s consonance and dissonance: combining the compactness and roughness approaches / Masina, Isabella (Ferrara U. ; INFN, Ferrara) ; Lo Presti, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Stanzial, Domenico (Ferrara U.)
At present, there are two approaches that aim at explaining on physical grounds the psychoacoustic perception of consonance and dissonance for dyads, whose pioneers have been, respectively, Galilei and Helmholtz: One is based on the “compactness” of the waveform of the combined signal, while the other on the absence of “roughness” due to possible beats. We perform a detailed study of each approach and find that none of the associated model versions, not even the more refined ones, is fully satisfactory when faced to perceptual data on dyads. [...]

Samba and CERNBox: Providing online access to Windows-based users at CERN / Lo Presti, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Iartza, Aritz Brosa (CERN) ; Bukowiec, Sebastian (CERN)
This paper presents the experience in providing CERN users with direct online access to their EOS/CERNBox-powered user storage from Windows. In production for about 15 months, a High-Available Samba cluster is regularly used by a significant fraction of the CERN user base, following the migration of their central home folders from Microsoft DFS in the context of CERN’s strategy to move to open source solutions. We describe the configuration of the cluster, which is based on standard components: the EOS-backed CERNBox storage is mounted via FUSE, and an additional mount provided by CephFS is used to share the cluster’s state. Managing locks in CERNBox and EOS / Lo Presti, Giuseppe (speaker) (CERN)
This contribution illustrates how we have evolved file locking in CERNBox and EOS. Initially introduced to support Office online applications, the functionality has been extended to be an integral part of Reva, the engine powering CERNBox. [...]
