The ATLAS Fast TracKer system / ATLAS Collaboration
The ATLAS Fast TracKer (FTK) was designed to provide full tracking for the ATLAS high-level trigger by using pattern recognition based on Associative Memory (AM) chips and fitting in high-speed field programmable gate arrays. The tracks found by the FTK are based on inputs from all modules of the pixel and silicon microstrip trackers. [...]

The ATLAS fast tracker processor design / Volpi, Guido (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.) ; Adelman, Jahred (Yale U.) ; Albicocco, Pietro (Frascati) ; Alison, John (Pennsylvania U.) ; Ancu, Lucian Stefan (Geneva U.) ; Anderson, James (JIVE, Dwingeloo) ; Andari, Nansi (Tours U., CNRS) ; Andreani, Alessandro (INFN, Milan Bicocca ; Milan Bicocca U.) ; Andreazza, Attilio (INFN, Milan ; Milan U.) ; Annovi, Alberto (INFN, Pisa) et al.
The extended use of tracking information at the trigger level in the LHC is crucial for the trigger and data acquisition (TDAQ) system to fulfill its task. Precise and fast tracking is important to identify specific decay products of the Higgs boson or new phenomena, as well as to distinguish the contributions coming from the many collisions that occur at every bunch crossing. The CDF II eXtremely Fast Tracker (XFT) is the trigger processor which reconstructs charged particle tracks in the transverse plane of the central tracking chamber. The XFT tracks are also extrapolated to the electromagnetic calorimeter and muon chambers to generate trigger electron and muon candidates. [...]

Design of a Hardware Track Finder (Fast Tracker) for the ATLAS Trigger / for the ATLAS collaboration
The use of tracking information at the trigger level in the LHC Run II period is crucial for the trigger an data acquisition (TDAQ) system and will be even more so as contemporary collisions that occur at every bunch crossing will increase in Run III. [...]

A Hardware Track Finder for ATLAS Trigger / Volpi, G ; Andreani, A ; Andreazza, A ; Citterio, M ; Favareto, A ; Liberali, V ; Meroni, C ; Riva, M ; Sabatini, F ; Stabile, A et al.
The existing three level ATLAS trigger system is deployed to reduce the event rate from the bunch crossing rate of 40 MHz to ~400 Hz for permanent storage at the LHC design luminosity of 10^34 cm^-2 s^-1. When the LHC reaches beyond the design luminosity, the load on the Level-2 trigger system will significantly increase due to both the need for more sophisticated algorithms to suppress background and the larger event sizes.
