Active dosimetry for VHEE FLASH radiotherapy using beam profile monitors and charge measurements / Rieker, Vilde F (CERN ; Oslo U.) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Stapnes, Steinar (CERN) ; Adli, Erik (Oslo U.) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN) ; Grilj, Veljko (SUBATECH, Nantes) ; Sjobak, Kyrre N (Oslo U.) ; Wroe, Laurence M (CERN) ; Aksoy, Avni (CERN ; Ankara U.) ; Robertson, Cameron S (Oxford U.) et al.
The discovery of the FLASH effect has revealed a high potential for treating cancer more efficiently by sparing healthy tissue. The surge in related medical research activities over the last couple of years has triggered a demand for technology with the capability of generating and measuring ionizing radiation at ultra-high doserates (UHDR). Single Event Effects (SEEs) correlated to pulsed beam effects induced by high energy electrons in a very well-established device, such as the ESA SEU (Singe Event Upset) monitor, are investigated in this paper. Measurements with different electron intensities have been performed at VESPER (The Very energetic Electron facility for Space Planetary Exploration missions in harsh Radiative environments) at the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) focused on very high dose rates per pulse. Updates, Status and Experiments of CLEAR, the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research / Korysko, Pierre (Oxford U.) ; Bateman, Joseph (JAI, UK) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Dosanjh, Manjit (CERN) ; Dyks, Luke (CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (IRFU, Saclay) ; Gilardi, Antonio (CERN) ; Rieker, Vilde (CERN) ; Robertson, Cameron (JAI, UK) ; Sjobak, Kyrre (Oslo U.)
The CERN Linear Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) at CERN is a test facility using a 200 MeV electron beam. In 2020 and 2021, a few hardware upgrades were done: comparators for position measurements were added on components, the in-air experimental area was re-arranged in order to provide more space, a robotic system was built to enable remote samples manipulations for irradiation studies, the BPM reading system was optimized and the laser double-bunch system implemented to allow for a doubling of the electron bunch frequency from 1.5 GHz to 3 GHz. Rotating-coil measurement systems are widely used to measure the multipolar fields of particle accelerator magnets. This paper presents a rotating-coil measurement system that aims at providing a complete data set for the characterization of quadrupole magnets with small bore diameters (26 mm). [...]

Beam Position Detection of a Short Electron Bunch in Presence of a Longer and More Intense Proton Bunch for the AWAKE Experiment / Senes, Eugenio (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip N (JAI, UK ; CERN) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN) ; Gilardi, Antonio (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Krupa, Michal (CERN) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Pakuza, Collette (CERN ; JAI, UK) ; Wendt, Manfred (CERN)
The AWAKE experiment studies the acceleration of electrons to multi-GeV levels driven by the plasma wakefield generated by an ultra-relativistic and high intensity proton bunch. The proton beam, being considerably more intense than the co-propagating electron bunch, perturbs the measurement of the electron beam position achieved via standard techniques. [...]

VHEE beam dosimetry at CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research under ultra-high dose rate conditions / Poppinga, Daniela (Unlisted, DE) ; Kranzer, Rafael (Carl von Ossietzky U., Oldenburg (main)) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN ; IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Gilardi, Antonio (CERN ; U. The aim of this work is the dosimetric characterization of a plane parallel ionization chamber under defined beam setups at the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR). A laser driven electron beam with energy of 200 MeV at two different field sizes of approximately 3.5 mm FWHM and approximately 7 mm FWHM were used at different pulse structures. [...]

An experimental study of focused very high energy electron beams for radiotherapy / Kokurewicz, Karolina (Glasgow U.) ; Brunetti, Enrico (Glasgow U.) ; Curcio, Alessandro (CERN) ; Gamba, Davide (CERN) ; Garolfi, Luca (CERN) ; Gilardi, Antonio (CERN ; U. Naples (main) ; INFN, Naples) ; Senes, Eugenio (CERN ; JAI, UK) ; Sjobak, Kyrre Ness (CERN ; U. Oslo (main)) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN ; U. Paris-Saclay) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) et al.
Very high energy electron (VHEE) beams have been proposed as an alternative radiotherapy modality to megavoltage photons; they penetrate deeply without significant scattering in inhomogeneous tissue because of their high relativistic inertia. However, the depth dose distribution of a single, collimated VHEE beam is quasi-uniform, which can lead to healthy tissue being overexposed. [...]
