Abstract Results of a search for strange pentaquark states $\Xi(1860)^0$ and $\Xi(1860)^{--}$ in neutron--carbon interactions at $\sim 51$ GeV mean energy of neutrons in the EXCHARM experiment have been presented. Such states in studied effective mass spectra $\Xi^-\pi^+$ and $\Xi^-\pi^-$ have not been observed. Upper limits of $\Xi(1860)^0$ and $\Xi(1860)^{--}$ production cross sections have been estimated.
