Abstract A Bayesian analysis of the probability of a signal in the presence of backgroundis described. As an example, the method was used to calculate the sensitivity ofthe GERDA experiment to neutrinoless double beta decay. In addition, we discussthe use of consensus priors, the look-elsewhere-effect in Bayesian analysis andother topics.
